I'm looking at the hp in 4-16 and viper in 4-12. I'd rather have the higher magnification but is viper that much better to make a difference?

I have a vortex viper pst. I also have a nightforce and I only notice differences in dull light. I have killed animals past 600 yards with both. If u want to shoot distance go with the best u can afford otherwise 300 or less just get the Diamondbacks!!

the viper model is better glass, also if you get the ffp model then you poi does not change at any magnification. which is awesome when we use the same gun to shoot less than 100 yards in the hills but over 400 on the prarie.

Have used a Viper HS LR 4x16x44. It has been great and tracks perfectly so far. If I bought another, it would just a HS in the same size. I've had the elevation knob move when using a scabbard on a horse. I waited for a Cabela's sale and got it for about 350 or maybe 400, forget, put twas a great price.

Relative to the ffp comment above, I think that may not be the whole story. As I understand things, it is not the bullet poi, point of impact, that changes in a second focal plane scope, but the hash marks relative yardage zero, so they usually just tell you at this X this hash = what ever. But the center x should still retain the same yardage zero if power is changed. Hopefully someone knows. I have all sfp scopes, mess with power and only use the center x, without problems so far.

Loveland, CO. was AZ.
I have a Vortex Diamondback HP 3-12x42 on an old Remington 721 30-06. It works perfectly as a hunting scope. I had a Viper 4-12x50 on my 270 that was excellent but gave the scope to a buddy who was in need of a scope that couldn't afford one. For the price differencpe I'd still buy the Diamondback HP all day before Viper.. The 270 ended up getting a Nightforce SHV thanks to my father in law buying as a birthday gift to me.. Good karma I guess for giving my buddy the Viper scope... Lol. Just buy the Diamonback HP

Get the Viper, buy once cry once. I have both scopes, diamondback on my wifes gun and viper pst on mine. They are not even close. Especially in low light, sun up situations.

I am pretty much a minimalist with a tight budget. I have a diamondback 4-16x42 and have been very pleased. There is slight distortion around the very edge of the field of view at 16x magnification so it doesn’t make a great spotting scope, but for what I paid it’s outstanding (on sale for $250). It's very versatile. I bounced it off some rocks and held zero no problem. The warranty is awesome, although I’ve never had to use it. My big question is durability, and after one tough year it’s still like new. I may purchase the binos as well.
