I am planning a rifle elk hunt to Utah this year. We will be in the Vernal area so any info anyone can provide me would be greatly appreciated. I have been looking at the Ashley National Forest around Marsh Peak. Any help?
If you introduce yourself and give us some background, you may get more feedback from a random first and single post on the internet.
I've caught fish on a bare hook in the past, but bait always seems to work better.
Don't pass any elk in the Uintas. I've never hunted Marsh Peak, but have hunted a lot in the Uintas. If you see horns, don't hold back. It's not a trophy hunt. Can be really thick country. Lots of dark timber in spots. Beautiful area, bring a fishing rod for the tons of lakes and enjoy.
As far as over by the vernal area look at the red cloud loop area. You will have a lot of competition on the rifle hunt. I hunt more on the north slope of the Uinta's versus the south slope and pass on smaller Bulls every year looking for that one big bull, but as was stated above if you don't know the area you might want to shoot the first bull you see. Good luck!
Thanks, I have no intention of passing any bull. This will be my first hunt in Utah second elk hunt. Have you hunted near Taylor Mountain? I know I'm asking a lot but I'm trying to get feel for the area.
Cruising through the forum and noticed your post. Here are my .2 cents on Vernal as I have lived here all my life. The rifle hunt is not easy, we have plenty of elk but the division broadcasts that its the best place to go for general elk so there will be a lot of people. Don't expect to shoot a trophy in fact you better shoot the first elk with antlers or you may not have another chance. On a positive side, your chances of getting one are not bad. In the 16 years I've hunted elk here I've only been skunked twice.
Marsh peak is at high altitude and that late in the year you could be looking at a grip of snow. It also is primarily deep timber which makes finding elk even more difficult. Taylor mtn is a good bet but again be willing to deal with a lot of people. You can use them to your advantage as the elk will be pushed around until they find a pocket of deep timber to hide in. If you go there a good place to see elk is along the Simplot boudary. The elk move there late in the year and are pushed there when pressured. Good luck!
