I was lucky enough to draw the Valle Vidal 1st season archery Tag this year. This past weekend I had a wonderful 1st scouting trip. Considering how dry it has been I was very surprised how much green feed was available. Lots of wild strawberries on the ground as well. I hiked in some of the high portions of the unit and spent the night. Saw about 15 cows and calves, and a very large bear. I didn't catch any bulls, but I didn't make it to the glassing area I planned to spy from. I'm sure I could have stumbled across a lot more, but didn't want to march through areas where I thought I would disturb them. I was also quite impressed by the amount of bugles I heard around sunset, gotta love mid summer elk talk! Night temps at elevation got down to the mid 40s, but that was assisted by some passing rain. I'm starting to get very excited for this hunt, this is a wonderful place.
For those of you who may have hunted this unit? I am preparing for my 2nd scouting trip in another week. Has anyone had experience in the eastern or south eastern lower elevation portion of the area? It looks like it should hold animals, but is also very dry. I am just wondering what other people have found. A PM would be greatly appreciated if you have thoughts on it or anything about past experience in this unit?
