Hi I'm new the fourm here. I would like some advice on where to take my dad out elk hunting for the first time. We are looking for OTC or limited draw archery units. Our plan is to set up a base camp near a good Troutstream and set our spike camp near a heavily traveled saddle. Neither of us have ever killed an elk so we're open to suggestions from those of you who have.
Some of the features I'm looking for in a elk unit 1.) plenty of elk 2.)very few hunters 3.)good trout fishing. A few friends has suggested unit 74 hunting the Hermossa Creek area. I liked the look of the land there and I called the local biologist for suggestions on where to fish/hunt/get away from other hunters. He said that part of upper Hermosa Creek had a massive fish kill due to an invasive species prevention project he also said that the trails accessible by motorcycle.
With the possibility of fishing a dead creek and being overrun by ATV hunters I have been looking at other areas to set up camp. Another area of interest is engine creek it looks like really thick timber that many hunters may pass up. I am also interested in hunting off the Durango train and hiking up Mt. SOB to crater lake.
I will be taking the Jeep out there as well as my KLR 650 and moutain bike if it will help get us away from the other hunters on 4x4 roads. Last year was my first year of elk hunting and I spent much of it chasing after other hunters bugle.
I'm not married to the idea of only hunting in unit 74. We have tossed around the idea of buying cow only tags and we don't care how big the bulls are we just want to hear them talk. Suggestions are appreciated.
