Does anyone have any info on this unit? A friend and I were looking into a hunt (1st or 2nd rifle) in 2017. From what I can gather, it will take us at least 1 PP and maybe 2 to get drawn.

From the internet, it appears to be a pretty rough unit.

Its a good hunt. Little rough....but it all comes at a cost...for the points needed its good. Get high, glass a few days before the opener is my only advice. I know basic, but if you don't get in front of them in there you will never catch up and be looking at tan butts all day. :)

Thanks Slug. I've spent a feed days watching tan butts. I was in Mexico but that's beside the point.

Packmule, will do. From what I can gather, I need to hunt south an maybe a little west of the Powderhorn.

Thanks Gentlemen.

I was in that area sheep hunting many moons ago. At the time that place was loaded with elk. Things could've changed by now, so I would talk to a Parks & Wildlife person before committing ( I would try calling the Gunnison office first). It is vast country, I had to hire some horses on short notice to get to where the sheep were.

I hunted deer there last year second season. We saw quite a few elk, even way down by the lake. I would not expect it to be a cake-walk, but there's elk in them thar hills!

We've already decided to have horses lined up before we head up to get the animals down. The plateau in that area looks like a great spot to start. It's about 1 1/2 to 2 miles in (y'all already know that) but that means I get to see the mountains like I like to see them. Boots, Backpack, Binoculars and a Rifle.

Glad y'all confirmed that area. It sure looks promising. 1PP may get us there. 2 looks like the number though.

On a side note: Sheephunter, you're scaring me. :(

How did you do on the deer hunt? I may apply for that tag this upcoming year.

Old guy here new to forum. I have spent quite a bit of time in powderhorn primitive area. If this might be one of your hunting choices I would have some good info.

Gents,

66 = good deer and elk....if you got the points to get in.....with three years now of record or near record rainfall totals and mild winters its only gonna get better.

I'm a little confused why it takes more points to draw archery vs first rifle on this unit? Is it just because there's more rifle tags? Better dates for rut?

I'd say its because of the rut....hence the 14pts or more needed for a non res muzzleloader tag (only 35 tags also so point creep)...Id say its normal 3pts or more for a good chance at a bull tag/non res in a limited unit ( 1st and 2nd rifle) and 5 pts at a reasonable chance for an archery tag/non res.......also hunt length has to be considered.....that archery tag is roughly 30 days long and you are always gonna be able to hit the rut every year.....compared to 1st rifle this year being later ( 1st this year is really just like second in previous years)
