Unit 53 Wyoming Mule Deer Help

Hey all,

posted in the spring, requesting some info on this unit, my first time there. Have about 5 days to get it done and it's coming up. ANY advice appreciated. I heard that Jen Bickel(sp?)has the scoop on this area. Jen, you out there? Plan is to set up a base camp somewhere east of the lake and check terrain based on what I hear, figure out, or where the weather tells me to go. Realize the weather is the big unknown. Going to hunt on foot and am willing to go extra miles to find a location that is NOT accessible by road traffic and ATV's, maybe spike out if I find a promising spot. Thanks all and hope you have or had a successful season, wherever you hunt. I expect to work hard to find a buck, maybe even a dandy.

If the snow continues I would check out the BLM. If it were me, I would backpack in from the National FOrest and hunt the borders of the forest and private ranches if the snow has not pushed them down yet.

If yo have an ATV I would bring it, a few two-track roads not passable in a truck that are passable in a ATV. If you dont have a ATV, then I would avoid those areas with two-tracks so to save you on frustration.

thank you much for the information. No ATV but good strong legs. Checked the weather and it looked there might be some white stuff and the long range forecast looks to have some more before the opener. Shannon

I read on the WY G&F forecast that they recommend hunting the edge of the forest boudaries, same as I suggested.

On the western boundary of the unit is a large reservoir, not sure if it will be open with the current government shutdown, but it may hold some animals if the snow pushed them way down. You can also access a lot of land from that area too, but I did see a lot of 2-tracks that I am sure get used by ATV's, UTV's, etc. Since you are not bringing a 4-wheeler I would study the maps hard and find a spot that requires you to walk in, and I am willing to bet you will not see many other people doing that.

I will be getting some specific information from a local who knows the area, but your advice makes a ton of sense. Stoked that there is weather in the area. Hopefully it sends the deer lower and concentrates them a bit. Will post up a report upon my return. Best to all who continue to hunt this fall. SRJ
