Unit 27 OTC January archery Mule/Coues Deer

Anyone have any experience hunting this tag? I'm planning on heading there in a couple weeks.

Where can I expect to find bucks? Higher elevation? Lower elevation? Should I plan on packing in a few miles? Or would I have just as much luck hunting near roads?

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

I can't speak to 27, but did another coues hunt earlier this month. We spent the first 2 days backpacking away from the road, but weren't seeing a lot of deer. We then starting glassing from near the road and covering more country that way, driving from glassing spot to glassing spot, and sightings went way up. We didn't find any big bucks, maybe we would have had we stayed further in, but if I had to do it again I'd stay mobile near the roads and hope a good buck appeared during daylight hours. The rut should help you with that.
