Anyone have any good info on hunting in these areas? I'm looking for animal quality elk, deer, and how the terrain is in these areas. Any insight would be greatly appreciated

I've been looking into the area east of granby lake, I'm just wondering what the quality of animals is there and how it is to hunt the later seasons mainly 3rd and 4th

3rd and 4th season are by far the best times to hunt 18 and 28 in my opinion. Elk can be tuff for the man that wont hunt hard you will have to go deep in do to extremely high population of hunters. Deer, i think is the most under estimated areas in the state. The population is growing therefore many extra tags have been given out last year. I feel that there is no reason why you couldnt hunt hard and shoot a 180plus inch deer and 280plus elk in these areas. There is a lot of public ground east of granby and some great hunting that way. I hope this helps.

I have been hunting this area since I was old enough to hunt big game! If you are willing to get off the beaten path there are some great animals to be had. It seems the deer quality is definitely back where it used to be. There have always been a lot of elk but the big boys are always less in numbers. I feel that there has been an increase in large bulls over the past few years. A lot of hunters in the area as well. Let me know if I can help you further.

I hunted unit 18 this year with a Muzzleloader for elk. I did not see a ton of elk, but I was fortunate to take a nice herd bull. With this unit, there are some good animals, but only if you work very hard. The terrain was steep and pretty dangerour at times, but that is where the elk were. Lots of up and down and miles on the boots, but it was worth it for me.

Hi All-
It looks like this is an older thread, but I wanted to add that I'm also looking at Unit 18 for deer possibly next year. I was looking at the public land between Hot Sulphur Springs and Parshall. Any input is appreciated. Just looking for somewhere to hunt while building points and this thread has some participants well known on the Eastmans's Forum. Thanks in advance!

I have hunted it a few times jroplanner. Will be there this year but my mobility impairs me. The area you discuss is a bit low for best early season action. Get back farther on 21 and hunt the nasty stuff. It will be difficult with a lot of blow down beetle kill on the floor.

Hey BleuBijou-
Thanks for the input. Yes, my research shows the area I'm referring to as wintering ground. I'd like to send you a PM to talk more. Thanks again and good luck this year!

Be careful of all the beetle kill. As I think I have posted in a previous thread I was there 1st season, the winds picked up, blowing maybe in the 20's and the trees were falling all around us. It was not safe and very scary indeed. If it was not for getting my elk out, I would not have put myself in that situation.

I've been hunting between spending a lot of time up at Grouse Mtn and Kinney creek this year. There hasn't been any fresh scat, prints, or beds and my trail cams haven't picked up any activity lately. I'm planning to try the east side of lake Granby specifically, Arapaho bay down to monarch lake. I haven't been there before so this is a last min effort to get elk (either sex) before the end of Sunday 13th. Anyone have a suggestion to an area to focus on in that area?
Thanks,
Eric

I am planning on hunting there this year, any details from your hunt
Looking for potential areas etc, any advice or info would be greatly appreciated.
Go in 4th season for best results or get away from everyone and hunt high in the first seasons.Check Stillwater area.
