I searched the forum for information about 16B and couldn't find anything but I do apologize if I'm the 1,000th post on the gila wilderness.

I drew the first archery elk hunt for 16B/22 as well as the archery deer tag for sept/jan. I was in the unit last year with a friend on the second archery elk hunt and we had good luck out of the Willow Creek Campground. Backpacked in about 4 miles and we found a group of elk in the burned areas.

I'm getting ready to scout areas this month and the next and I'm looking for a helping hand for additional spots to check out within backpack distance. (4-10) miles from the trailhead. PM me if your that wonderful person.

Additional Questions:
-We saw a two bucks in the Iron Lake area- but is there a better place for deer during September?
-With the early elk hunt should I be worried about bulls still being in bachelor groups in higher elevation?
-The willow creek trail head had 35 vehicles in it on sept 15th.- should I expect the same for snow lake?
-Are there trailheads that are to rough for horse trailer access that might be of better luck?

Thank you for your help. I recently moved to Socorro from Montana and this is my first season as a resident. I can trade elk info for duck/waterfowl here in the middle rio grande valley.

I went up there this weekend and saw quite a few elk, but had trouble finding any deer. Any info would be much appreciated!

I hunted elk in that unit over 5 years ago. Did see some deer out there. It appeared to me that the further south I went in the unit the more deer I saw. Hope this helps. PM me if you have any ???

Curious how your hunt went in 2017 were looking to hunt the gila somewhere not sure unit 2019 gonna buy landowner tag hopefully. Do people drive four wheelers thru wilderness area or do they have to park in certain areas?
