Hi backcountry81,
I drew a Unit 014 late mule deer tag in 2009. At that time, I heard a lot of talk about the area being not so good due to lion predation. What I would caution you about is this negative talk that can come from "hear say" hunters. I had arguably, the most adventuresome and rewarding deer hunts of my life. I looked over many bucks and near the end of my first week hunting, killed my best mule deer buck to date. The unit is sometimes referred to as the Granite Mountains Hunt, but there is a tremendous amount of real estate to look over. Over the years, my wife and I have hunted chuckars in the Granites and became pretty familiar with the unit, probably more than the average person. The usual mule deer hunting tactics apply out there: glass, move to new real estate, glass and then glass some more. Spend as much time hunting as possible. The story of my hunt is published in my book "Spirit of a Hunter" 2010. Eastman's Hunting Journal published a photo in the Dec 2010 - Jan 2011 #122 Issue. Make no mistake, your father has a great tag. If you would like, email me at
[email protected] with your phone number and I'll tell you a little of what I know about the unit.
