Any recommendations on outfitters or fly services for DIY Moose hunt in Alaska? My buddy and I are interested in a float trip (I think we prefer float to being dropped off at a lake camp but open to suggestions.) We will need a service that can provide all the gear and get us out there.

We are Florida boys that love to hunt out west. After many guided trip we are ready to go it alone. Want to do this right and need your help in picking the best service for success and safety.

Thanks for any help.

Search the site also as there is I believe two very informative threads if I remember correctly. Search DIY Public Land Alaska Moose

Went with Renfro's in 2015. Good hunt but not without "issues" We did end up 2 for 2 on bulls, one big bull and one smaller one.

What type of "issues"? Something with the outfitter? Would you recommend using Renfro's? I am also looking into doing an unguided moose hunt in Alaska so I am curious.

You might make sure you check on his license status. He was the guide/outfitter on the whole Theresa Vail criminal issue. Her case is complete, I don't know about his.

I met papabear at the Denver ISE, they left a really good impression on me. I will be booking with them. When talked to them though I think they're booked through 2017 I think. Might be worth a call.

I booked with Papa Bear for 2018 this winter. I hear good things and am looking forward to the hunt. I hope to have some pics, and will definitely have a story to tell in a few years.

Gents,

How did you start your research on which tag to apply for? I looked for hunt data but it seems to be scattered. I'm making the assumption you need to draw the tag then book a fly in service. Or am I missing something. Just starting my research to do this in the next 5 years or so. Thanks

Read the regs. Most the of time you should pick the area you want to hunt, find a transporter/guide that flies into that area and then apply for your tag. Many transporters/guides book up way before the tag drawing. Many units have unlimited tags
