does anyone have a good lightwieght tripod they recomend for backpacking. I know some of the better ones are particularly heavy. I was thinking of just using one i have mounted to a rifle stock but its not all that stable.

If you can swing the price tag, gitzo is a great tripod, but with greatness, comes money. You know how it goes.... I had a chance to play with one and believe me, its worth every penny.

I would check out the Promaster T525P Carbon fiber tripod which weighs 2.3 lbs I haven't played with one but they look great and reviews are good and will definitely be on my list of which tripod to get when I get my spotter this summer (hopefully fingers crossed that I'll have the money) sorry couldn't of been more help hope this does

I use a Tech Trek T-Pod, which is a table top tripod. Very well made, fast to setup and takedown, weights about 12oz, extends to about 13", breaks down into two pieces about 7" long, and is advertised to support up to 15 lbs. I added another ball head to the base to adjust for uneven ground. Not perfect for all occasions, or maybe not any, but it will get the job done when you are in the middle of nowhere.
I have not used one but another possibility is the Pedco Ultrapod II. I think it weighs about 4 oz. Not sure how much weight it will support but it looks interesting.

I saw this was an old thread, but thought I'd post anyway since it's something people are always looking for. I just got this tripod a few days ago and like it real well. I took it out this morning hiking a few miles and used it with my ED50, was reading freeze brands on our bulls from over a half mile. It is pretty darn stable and not to heavy, although not extremely light. I like how small it collapses also, it fit in my Eberlestock J34's side pocket without removing the head. I also used it with my Minox 13x56 binos this morning and it worked real well there also. I got mine from S&S archery and they have a real good video review on it. I got the 6160 head they advertise and it works well. In many areas I hunt I need the extra height and can't go with a real light short one like the other one listed.
Now for the downside. It gets me just close enough to standing height to tease me. It's the reason I'm looking at getting an angled ED50, I think it would work fine standing with that scope, it's that close. I considered going with a Slikk 634, but it would have required taking the head off each time to fit in my pack pocket. I don't use the tripod standing often enough to justify that I don't think.

This is what I use its not the best or the most expensive, but it does the job. The tripod weighs 2lbs, folds down to 17", extends from 6" to 59.25", supports 2.2 lbs, and only cost $49.00. The pistol grip is nice and smooth for scanning. Eventually, I'll spend another $40.00 and replace the head with an all metal head so it can support more weight.

Gitzo Gt-1542T with Outdoorsman's pan head. Total weight less than 2.5lbs or there abouts, collapses down to 18 inches with the pan head because the legs invert 180 degrees, gets tall enough for me at 5'10", and super stable. Down side is money, but that only hurts once.

I have a Vanguard Alta and a Vortex High Country. The Vanguard is heavy, but is super solid. The Vortex is light, but the ball head doesn't offer really good control or smooth movement. I am still looking for something that does both.
