Yes... Old Ski poles work for me. Lightweight and strap to a pack with ease. Usually cheap at garage sales, the only thing they dont do is telescope smaller.
Ive been scouting with them and backpacking with them this year.
I went to Walmart and got a pair for $20 so far they've held up for about 4 trips... Wasnt sure Ive I would actually use them so I went the cheap route. This past weekend I actually went for a hike with out them and I sure wish I wouldnt have left them. With bad knees and ankles they are manditory for me now.
I just used my new set on a scouting trip and they are nice. Instead of your ankles doing all of the balancing while walking on uneven ground, the poles do it. This keeps your feet and ankles from getting fatigued. fatrooster.
I used to scoff at the notion of using them - I thought they were simply used by wussy backpackers - until I tried them. I have to admit I'm converted. They really save the ankles, knees and back in steep country - especially with a load.
