Hello all! New to the forum. I am from Michigan and planning a trip hopefully to Montana for deer. I just want to get some opinions on how the heard is doing and if I have a pretty good chance at bagging a buck. I know some guys that hunted the 670 district just north of Glasgow and had good luck but that was 6 years ago.
Will I have a good chance at getting a tag for that district? Is the population still holding up? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Believe 670 is an area open on a general deer combo tag, which has been a 100% draw for several years if I am right. Best to check the regs. Most of MT is huntable with the deer combo or big game combo. Just a few units require a special draw. Deer population where I have been in Rosebud and Carter county has seemed better the last 2 years, which are south and south east of Glasgow. If the winter this year is mild to moderate in E MT, I'd expect decent numbers of deer where I hunt. Not sure about N of Glasgow.

Getting a buck is usually fairly easy, getting a mature buck, mulie or whitetail, usually not so easy. Spend some time on MT FWP website and use the maps there, both hunt planners and the BMA maps. You can have a great hunt on private property on BMA's. I'd give a nod to BMA's that limit hunter numbers and take reservations. Good luck!

Welcome to the forum. If you were in eastern Montana 6 years ago there would have been a decrease in numbers just after you were here. but there have been some good years lately numbers coming back up and so far this winter has been very good. I don't think you will go wrong with anywhere in eastern MT. Tim McCoy mentioned Rosebud and Carter Counties. I live right between there in Custer county. I am partial to the region 7 for deer . I know people who come here from other parts of Montana. listen to what Tim said about the maps and just a heads up MT game and fish takes down the BMA info after a few months to prepare for updating the info next year so if you see a promising BMA save the map to your computer not just the link . Tim was also right about the BMAs that limit hunters and take reservations . a lot of them have really minimal hunting pressure . most all if this side of the state including your 670 is usually just a general tag but of course check the regs to make sure. and if you are planning your trip around vacation days . opening week is rarely the best week.

Welcome, lots of great sportsman on the Eastmans forum. I hunt Montana. Elk in the West part of the state and mule Deer out East. We hunt an area southeast of Glasgow. and also the Ekalaka area. Ekalaka seems to have a better quality of bucks, and less hunters. we didnt see as many bucks there (maybe 8-10 bucks per day, and 1 good shooter buck everyday) Lots of good block management. we hunted a BMA just northwest of the town of Ekalaka and had to sign in at the ranch house, but we saw 15 bucks in one afternoon out there. Never saw any large bucks there but that was three years ago. Numbers have really gone up.

There is a ton of public land in Montana. FWP website is really helpful, get familiair with the different areas. I have also called Biologists many times as well as BMA coordinators. Mosyt FWP employees are awesome sources of info. We hunted an area west of Glasgow a few seasons ago, there was a limited number of deer and tons of hunters. we decided to move and go on the south side of Fort Peck Lake. better terrain, more deer and less hunters.

One more suggestion. Buy some quality glass. out in the open, you should be sitting behind your glass for hours everyday. I have a vortex viper HD 15-45 spotter and wish I had bought the bigger version 20-60. I use it all the time and feel its a necessity. the ability to pick out a buck at a mile is a huge advantage.

Good luck on your research. have fun.

Once you make plans get motel room saved, unless you are camping. The motels fill up well before hunting season because there is not many places to stay in small town MT.

When you say it is 100% general draw that means everyone applying gets a tag? Or what are the chances on a first time draw for 2 groups of 4 guys to both draw?

No, I was probably unclear. It has been 100% recently. As I recall, both the MT non-resident draw for the deer combo and the big game combo have been under subscribed the last several years. Meaning all that put in drew. But, both have tag limits, so if lots more folks put in, it would not be a 100% draw. I guess it is a draw tag that let's you hunt their general season as a NR, maybe not best described as a general season tag as the term is commonly used. Anyway, unless demands jumps, you'd all four draw. Just in case demand goes up and it becomes a 80% draw, I suggest you each put in individually. Hope that is a better description.

This year the quota for nonresident tags in Montana was 17,000 deer/elk combination and 4,600 deer only I remember for sure they had quite a few deer /elk combination left over, I don't remember on the deer only. don't forget the early march deadline for applying. if you apply as a group it will be all or nothing. I agree with Tim's suggestion to apply individually , then if one guy doesn't get a deer only they can see if there are some OTC surplus tags for the deer/elk combination . It would really be a bummer to be the one guy in the party that gets to get an elk.

I've hunted around Glasgow a few times pulled the trigger on a decent whitetail near the milk river. Didn't see any muley bucks I wanted to use my tag on. I hunted both public and private and like mentioned you will want to reserve a place to stay well in advance.

North, welcome to the forum from a former Michigander. Relocated to Billings last August, didn't spring for non-resident tags last fall, but have seen plenty of deer/antelope in the Eastern MT area - Regions 5 & 7, been out on a couple road trips early this year around Billings and saw several deer/antelope including a few bucks. Can't really speak for any specific district, but was a pretty mild winter and populations should be solid this year.

Another thing to think about is one way car rental rates if you fly into one airport and out of another. AAA, Sam's and Costco give good discounts. Also check out this website to compare car rental rates-
