So here's the deal.

This will be my first fall chasing elk. We applied for a controlled hunt and didn't draw. So we decided, we were still going to hunt some where and decided to get a Tex Creek general tag (10/15 - 10/21). I have spent time previously in Idaho in and around Ketchum, Mackay, and on top of Borah Peak (this was awhile ago), but my first time in the Tex Creek area. Looks like we will be focusing on Unit 66. We will be probably set-up camp and maybe do an overnight camp farther in at some point.

A few questions I have for the folks on the forum:

1-Any areas in unit 66 you would recommend NOT going, and if willing, areas to focus on (higher elevations, burns, etc.)?

2-This area is somewhat near Greater Yellowstone area. Will/should grizzlies be a big concern in the area? I've seen different reports of outside and inside grizzly country. Like to get someones first hand experience.

3-Recommendations on places to set-up base camp.

4-Anyone else here going to be hunting the area?

Thanks for the help!!

Yes there are Grizzlies in unit 66. I wouldnt be concerend with them though. That is a tough hunt and no matter how far back in you think you are you will run into people and not just a few people. We call it the 7 day war. My only advise is higher is not always better...

Great! I should feel right at home than.
My thoughts on a lot of people may be different. During our 9-day deer hunt in Wisconsin, if I don't see orange within 200 yards, I have a very secluded spot. Most places have people with 100 yards or less.

One thing I would consider is hunting early in the season and doing lots of glassing and sitting at water holes. Being from Wisconsin, I know you know how to sit in a tree stand....(.I have relatives up near ashland..). Bring your tree stand and sit. You will be surprised. There will be less people early.....I would say most hunters hunt the 3rd week.....if you can, hunt the first 2. We have had lots of luck hunting this way. Patience is key.
