Im suffering a bit of the drawing blues and scramblin' to get a backup trip lined up after not getting drawn for the Deer combo license in Montana...
The way I see it, if we want to still do a Muley trip this year our choice is either OTC Idaho, or Wyoming. I have 1 point in Wyoming- and at this point in my research that doesn't really look like it will get us much. I am looking at possibly entering the special draw for Wyoming (since that is about the cost we were planning on paying for MT deer combo) and listing something like G or H as 1st choice, then R or Y or D as a second choice. That way we can gain another point for next year, and get R, Y, or D lined up for this year.
For Idaho, I've been trying to focus research on units in the southern 1/3rd of the state, since the terrain is a bit more forgiving (my dad is 64). But the units with the highest success and good public access (such as 39 and 43) sound downright scary in terms of hunting pressure and ATV's etc. Talk about Paralysis by Analysis!
My next step is to call the regional offices and get some feedback on the Winter conditions and and post season counts that may have been conducted. I know Both those states and Colorado have been hammered this year with snow.
Not sure if I'm asking any specific questions...I guess this is more of a rant and just sharing my gameplan. Feel free to throw in your .02 cents if you feel inclined...still very new to all this (had my first Western Hunt last year- Antelope in WY).
Cheers!
