Question for the Wyoming locals or I guess people in the know. I have a BLM map for a unit and noticed that there are some sections that are marked as Wyomning state land. Now this land adjacent to BLM land. What are the rules in Wyoming on these such lands? Can a guy hunt this much the way you would BLM land? Thanks.

Generally yes. But the state can lease this land and the rules change. If state land is surrounded by private, your screwed.

You can hunt them, but you can't camp on them. Occasionally there are special rules, but 99% of the time as long as its publically accessible your good to go.

I was told you were supposed to get permission from the person leasing it. But he could not deny permission, so if he said I got this leased get out & you said can I hunt? He could not say no.

I used to hunt a really large ranch in central Wy a lot. On one boundry, it bordered a school section (section= 1 sq mile). there was another ranch on the other side that bordered the section on 3 sides, so it was totally surrounded by private prop. This ranch posted all 4 sides with No trespassing signs. The ranch owner I knew told me I could hunt it with his permission. I used to climb the fence and shot several nice deer & elk in it. One day the foreman of the other ranch challenged me and said he was calling the sheriff and have me arrested. I said go ahead, I have permission and showed him my tags signed by the owner I knew. He wasn't happy but backed off. Guess he knew we were right.Bottom line is you have to know what you can & can't do. If you have any doubt, call the state land div.

No permission is needed to hunt state land if it is accessible by going through BLM or private land that the owner grants you access through, as mentioned in the above post. We kill most of our elk every year on state land that we can access by going through BLM. If a piece of state land is irrigated and there are crops on it, then you either have to get permission from the person leasing it or wait until the crops are harvested to hunt it.
