You might try getting ahold of Mark or Cory at Outdoors International, web site is gothunts.com - they are Idaho based and book hunts for hunters all over the world. I have hunted with Cory and he is a good guy.

Sorry, I've been pretty vague in my post. I would like to spot and stalk. We grew up chasing deer and elk in New Mexico and Colorado but never bear. We are looking for a new experience in new country. Thanks again fellas.

Mile high outfitters is bait and hounds.......hard to find an outfitter that makes a living bear hunting spot and stalk without bait or hounds in Idaho. ..Montana is spot and stalk only so might be better looking up there. You can probably find spot and stalk in Idaho just not many outfitters do it. ..try horse creek outfitters. .adam beaupre....and elk springs outfitters...al Bayer. Both i know personally, and both great hard working guys

Thanks guys. I spoke with Shade from Gothunts today. He confirmed the responses above. Although I'd like a spot and stalk hunt, over bait and hounds aren't out of the question. BTW, I've never used an Outfitter/ guide before. I will ensure to do my research and take advice from the fine folks here on the forum. Thank you all.

You have plenty of time to research and pick an area and a DIY hunt for spring bear would be relatively easy..so to speak! I myself wouldn't go guided for spot and stalk.

Give hound hunting a try. It's much harder than you think and full of excitement. Many people underestimate the difficulty of hound hunting and being able to harvest a mature boar by catching several bear until you catch the one you want can be very, very hard.

If i could chase a pack of hounds year round id be a happy man. It's an absolute blast of excitement. I miss having my hounds for lion, but i have plenty of friends that still do for when i have time to go. ..if you have the chance i would do it in a heartbeat! ..couple friends of mine run a hound only bear/lion outfit right outside of boise, if your interested i can give you their info

MileHigh, did you decide what you want to do? I'm in the same position as you. I'm going to be in montana the first week of May 2016 and really want to go hunting spring bear but have never been hunting bear anywhere and really don't know where to start. I'm a white tail hunter from NY so will probably do a guided hunt just to learn as much as possible. I've been hearing that the first week of may is hit or miss depending on the snow pack though and dont want to waste thousands of dollars and not see bears. What are your guys thoughts?

I've done the bait thing a few years in the Panhandle and heavy snow years can be tough just for access. There is more bear movement towards the end of May as the rut progresses. Fish and Game pushed the dates back a little last year so most units up here are open into June now.
If any of you are set on spot and stalk Unit 1 up north is thick (all the panhandle), but doesn't allow bait or hounds so it's a good option to look into.
