So I unexpectedly drew a SD mule deer tag in unit 35L (Custer National Forest) and haven’t been able to find very much info about the unit anywhere. Was hoping somebody might have some pointers on the unit as I don’t have the first clue where to start. Unfortunately I’m about 15 hours away in OK with a newborn so pre-scouting isn’t really an option. The tag is good for mulie or whitetail but I’ll be targeting mule deer unless an absolute giant whitetail presents itself. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Be prepared to walk a long ways. You will see a ton of orange and need to get way off the road. There are some really big walk in areas there. Nice bucks, but be prepared to walk.

Pre-scouting will probably not help you much as this unit gets molested by bow hunters. I hunt private by north of Buffalo and have hunted nat. forest by Ludlow they have maps at forest entrances and country isn't very hard to learn. You cant hunt walk-in areas with your tag. I have not hunted slim buttes east of Buffalo but I have friends out there that say deer numbers there are higher as well as hunter numbers. Good luck awesome country.
