We didnt harvest anything on sons elk/deer hunt but whatba blast! We left a crowded ares where we camped to focus on a place I know for deer. After a steep pre light hike we settled in to glass and just as the son pokes its first rays of lights over the hill my son spots movement on the skyline and we see are first elk. 3 rag horns that we would have dropped if the werent on the other very steep mountain. So we keep glassing closer to us and kept seeing does but no bucks big or small. We get up after a couple of hours to find a better viewing point and imideatly see ELK! 300 YARDS! haha, arent they always just out of sight? Unfortunately they were on the move and i was unable to get son set up fast enough to plug the big 6x6 pushing cows out of the area. Bust. The next morning we found ourselves right in the middle of about 30 deer, mostly does with a few very small bucks. Son was overwhelmed when he had the rifle on the sticks, he said "dad, if I shoot one i might hit a die". He was right, they were in a tight group. Noe game but we made aome fantastic memories and he cant stop talking about how close the deer were to us, an open sight rifle would have been ideal! Until next time, i still have an archery november mule deer tag and pheasant just opened up, oh and waterfowl..

Good job with the boy. Sounds like he had an exciting hunt and I’m sure he’s already dreaming of next year.

Great story Ivory, and thanks for sharing it. I just read an article last night in the latest Bugle magazine that had some similarities to yours. It is titled "Don't Shoot!" in the situation ethics section and it is a wonderful story about a father/son hunting experience. You are definitely doing right by your son.
