I drew a Wyoming general tag and decided against hunting grizzly and decided to hunt unit 13 it may not be the best general area but I feel comfortable hunting there on a 10 day solo hunt. I'm looking for a little advice about area, of coarse I'm not looking for anyone to give away there secret spot. I scouted that area last summer so I have few places to start. It seems like the area gets a fair amount of hunting pressure from the amount of camps I seen so I'm wondering how the hunting pressure is in the archery season? The area is cut up a bit by roads but a fair amount of them are closed so I'm thinking of taking my mountain bike but wonder if people run those roads with ATV's anyway? I've hunted in a area like that before where I spent the time to get up early and hike in and at first light someone drives up to you on a ATV. This area also has a lot more timber than I'm use to so that's a new aspect to over come. I've tried to connect with the biologist in this area but having trouble getting a return call. This is also my first time hunting elk solo so any advice hunting solo would be helpful like packing a elk out solo:D

One of the main reasons I joined this forum.
Just love hunting this state and hope everyone who comes here to hunt has a great time.

I chauffeured my son out to unit 13 when he drew a general tag a couple yrs ago. He was 14 at the time and we hunted 9 days in the middle of September. I was shocked at the number of camps and hunters in the area when we were there, seemed every little spot a tent or camper could be set up off the gravel roads had one. The campground off the main road (north unit boundary) was full too. I was hopeful midweek would thin out the numbers but it didn't seem to matter. We had fun though, saw lots of deer and sat on a nice wallow a couple of evenings too. There were elk were there, they would bugle at night but get quiet during the day.

Even back in the day during archery season you couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting another hunter. Imagine its even more of a zoo these days...

Don't be afraid to move your hunt across the highway into the Snowies. Snowies have lots of places to get away from most folks.

Be sure to take some judo points for grouse too, we saw quite a few grouse on the ridge tops and trails. My son had an absolute blast with those.

There was another tag included with the elk tag, I can't remember if it was fishing or small game though. Might want to give game and fish a call to be sure.

The WY small game tag is a separate license. Eighty some $ for a non-resident. I usually get one when in WY on an antelope hunt, as the area we hunt is over-run with rabbits and they are a blast to hunt with a .22 pistol. The small game license is good for rabbits, mt. grouse, dusky grouse, but NOT for sage grouse. You can find all this info on the WY G&F website.

Load of crap...the only thing you'll hit swinging a dead cat in general elk units in Wyoming is an elk...including in unit 13.

Plus, about 60% of the "camps" in September are recreationists and not hunters.

Like any other area, get off the roads a bit, use your noggin for something other than hanging a hat on...and good things happen.

Seen it...

More general elk:

Came around the corner on the highway headed to camp and found this one. Grabbed my rifle, threw the orange on, and walked into the timber 200 yards and shot this one wearing street clothes:

Shot this one within sight of my wall-tent:

Another general area bull:

No doubt Buzz you know your elk, hats off to you. It was a humbling hunt for us to say the least.
