this is something I can say I have never thought about. I was looking at some pics of 3d shoots and some of the targets were like 3 yards away. between 10 and 20 I know my bow is pretty darn close. i am using a single pin sight and 20 is the very lowest it will go with my set up. but instead of aiming with a lower distant pin wouldn't i aim with a higher yardage pin, like 30 or 40?? its playing some mind games with my head. ill have to try it out in the morn.

I'm not sure on targets but with the one elk that I shot at just under 5 yards I just forgot about the pins and went back to a instinct aim. It hit him right where I aimed.

Yep, the arrow has to rise to the line of sight once if leaves the bow, so on very close shots like you are talking you will hit low with your 20 yard pin. You cannot though be lower than the distance between your arrow shaft and pin, that's how far off you'll be if the target is at 1", or just enough to let the arrow off the string. This distance is different for different setups (vertical distance from 20 yd or top pin to shaft). Makes a difference especially hunting out of a blind where animals can be a foot or so from the blind at times. I've had deer and turkeys inside 3 yards before for shots.

I have a cheat sheet that i carry in one of my quiver pockets at 3D shoots and refer to it when target yardage gets closer than 20 yards. My set-up is a 5 pin spot hog with the short pin being 30 yards. There is no real science to it, shoot your 20 at 15, 10, 5 and 3 yards and make notes on point of impact then adjust, believe me, the short targets with real small spots can be more difficult than the longer ranges.

Probably not good enough for 3D shoots, but all of my pins are in the vitals inside 5 yards. Since I don't shoot 3D, I don't think I'll worry about it none.

3 yards is dead on with 60 yard pin. crazy! i tried that looking down the arrow thign and was having a bit harder time with it.

It seems so weird, but often times on multi-pin setups it's the 50 or 60 that is good at 10'. If you think about it another way though (if you hit low, use a further pin) it makes sense.

Under 5 yards I think I would just point in the direction the arrow needs to go and let it loose.

agreed, in a hunting situation i would too. i brought it up because of a TTH challenge coming up i noticed a target was way close at an angle and the more points i can score the better.

I agree with you all.....however embarrassed to admit so we can all learn from my mistake......that difference from arrow rise to pin at 10 yards under is like 3inches or so.....and doesn't get really smaller under 5 yards.

I spent 3 days tailing a herd and finally got the big bull following 2 cows into the dark stuff. The cows practically sniffed me and the bull walked by at 5 yards or less.....being a newbie I put my 10 pin on him and let it rip. There was a loud crack which I though was a rib breaking.....until my son uttered....."ah Dad, your arrow is right there " In a horizontal branch at 2 1/12 yards in front of me

Regardless of the range.....gotta clear the arrow flight path :)....still stings 12 years later

Under 5yds I just use my 40 yd pin. Also if you have a round sight housing just put it in the center and you should be in the kill area. Just practice and you'll know.

Shot my antelope at just under 5 yards last year, he was head down drinking straight on towards me i put 15 yard pin on the spot where his neck meet the top of back . Arrow went in between the should blades and came out between his hind legs. He ran about 200 yards and bleed less then a cup, got one lung and liver .

I missed a nice whitetail in KS a few years ago. I was sitting in a tree stand and he came right under me...I was shooting straight down between my feet. That was a shot I didn't prepare for.

if you have archers advantage when you print your sight tapes you also print the short range conversion and will tell you, mine reads like this, i just list a few
6 feet=96 yards, 15 feet=40 yards, 25 feet=24 yards, 36 feet= 17 yards
hope it helps.
