second choice Wy. unit?

I have been on this forum for about a year this is my first post. I signed up last year to help plan my first Wy. hunt. I drew a doe/fawn tag and had a great time. This year I would like to put in for one of the top units with my first choice to build my points and draw a buck tag on a second choice. I am just looking for a good unit with access and an opportunity to take a decent buck this year. I am open to any area of the state. Any input on this would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

Look at 72. I haven't followed the odds in awhile, but at one time you could draw it on 2nd choice. 7 is another one I use draw on second choice years ago.

You are probably not going to draw either unit as a second choice unless you pony up for the special tag. I hunted unit 72 last fall and the numbers were WAY down from the 2 previous years. We scouted for a week before the opener and covered pretty much all the public land that can be accessed without paying a trespass fee. We saw only one large group of animals, about 30 with only one decent buck and they stayed close to private land. Otherwise we saw only small groups of animals, looked to me like the 70-72 units that used to be good units are mediocre at best now. I have never hunted unit 7 so can't comment on it. We did manage to fill our tags but it was a tough hunt for average bucks.

You can look up the draw odds on the WY web site and see what units had tags left over after the 1st choice drawing Its a bit confusing though. Reading the MRS carefully so you understand the draw will help and there are some 2nd choice units listed in the MRS too. Almost any unit that can be drawn 2nd choice will have some access issues. Generally in WY the better the draw odds the worse the access. Thats not to say some of them cant be a quality hunt but do your research before you apply and figure out how to get to the public land. A gps with a hunting gps map chip is almost mandatory in these areas.
