A buddy and I are in the process of planning our fall 2015 antelope hunt (my first wyoming hunt). We've settled on units in the SE part of the state (Laramie, Rock River, Glenrock)partially b/c we're coming from OK and its close and also bc i have a buddy who lives in Laramie that we can stay with if we opt to not stay in a motel.

We don't have any preference points so we will probably put in for a prime spot to get a preference point but we are looking specifically at 38 and 30 for our fall backs. I understand the access is limited but I have the BLM maps already and am ok with driving around and hitting small pieces of scattered BLM and state land. We will also have the landowner chip for the Garmin.

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with these units? Feel free to PM me if you'd prefer.

We would also like to make this hunt a combo trip with something else since we will be driving all the way up there. Either mule deer or cow elk. Or both if they can be found in the same area. I have done a ton of reading up on the antelope units but I don't know much about the elk/mule deer in this area. Are there any areas close or overlapping the 30/38 areas that would be worth looking into for elk or mule deer?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

I find it odd that so many out of staters hunt the eastern and NE part of the state. Are the draw odds that bad on the western side?
They take max points for the most part. Everything on the eastern side of the state have access issues due to so much private, and can usually be drawn without points.

I've hunted both units 34 and 38 and you can fill tags on public land, but you will hunt hard. You'll have to cover a lot of ground because the public land is scattered. You'll have to call the local G&F office and get the land owner list that allows access then look at the WIA's. I think 34 will give you more land to hunt in the unit, but I would defiantly have a GPS with land owner chip, and good maps. If you decided to go with 34 shoot my a pm I can give you a little head start. When you look at a map of 38 there is a lot of public North and east of Laramie, but most odd the roads aren't public, the county gave them to the landowners so you can't drive on most of them to access the public land and they won't give you permission either.

Exactly. I couldn't touch any of the western units without PP's. My plan is to hunt the tougher eastern units for a few years till I have the points to hunt some of the good units out west. It won't be a cake walk but I've put a lot of hours into going over BLM maps and we will have the garmin chip so I'm confident it can be done. We're healthy and are prepared to walk to areas you cant see from the road

I've looked at 34 but it looks like only about a 30% chance of drawing it. Looking at the map I'm not sure why... maybe some I may put in for it anyway with 38 and 30 as backups. If I do I'll be sure to give you a shout!

Yes, no PPs was 29.2% for 34, but just a fraction of 1PP was 100%. Therefore, if someone you know has 1PP and would party with you both of you will draw tags.

Personally I hope your right TG but I question if you can really rely 100% on drawing a tag based off of last years numbers. Draw odds were skewed last year because of the reduced tag #'s; alot of people were surprised they didn't draw and got their preference point. I think this years draw odd's will reflect that and once again prove more points than last will be needed to guarantee a draw.

Very true because you can't always know what will happen as far as who will do what and I guess nothing is 100% guaranteed except for death and taxes as the old saying goes. The good thing is that before the application deadline the final Regs will be online to see what the tag numbers will be and a person can then modify or withdraw if it looks like they aren't 100% sure of getting the tag. That's pretty much why I stated what I did.
