I have a muzzleloader cow hunt in 231 coming up and just got home from a few days of scouting. Spent some time around Eagle Valley then headed northeast towards the Utah border around Whiterock mountains for most of the trip. I really wish I could have taken a few more days off because I came home a bit frustrated... Taking advice of the locals up there, I ended up hiking 10-13 miles a day around the north end of Whiterock mountain looking for track, calling and glassing hard in the mornings and evenings. Saw one small bull hanging out in the burns bugling but could not find any cows herded up. Most of the track I found was very old. I'm a bit at a loss at where to check out next. Maybe the elevation I was scouting around was a bit too low(7k-8.5k range) for this time of year?? Anybody here have any experience hunting 231 for elk and willing to throw me a PM to give a new Elk hunter a bit of direction? I'm not asking for a honey hole or anything. Just a general area or mountain range I should check out. I am willing to put in the hiking miles so, back-country areas are not out of the picture for me. I would appreciate any tips or advice. Thanks in advance!
