What ways do you scout?

I've used a Mt Bike many times where there are roads that have been closed or gated off fire roads. I know a few guys that have flown over a new area to find water sources.

What unique ways have you scouted?

I started hitting Google Earth
pretty hard last year. Helped a lot with my antelope hunt in looking for water that wasn't easily found if you didn't already know about it. It also helped in my deer unit which I was not super familiar with before drawing the tag. After a scouting trip and first weekend out hunting I jumped back on Google Earth to see if there was anything that could give me more prospective about the area. It let me cover ground I couldn't cover in the three or four days I was out there and helped me game plan my moves the next time I was there. It is amazing how much detail it gives you terrain wise even in the most remote places. It also has a tool that lets you draw your path and shows distance and elevation change which was cool as well. Definitely not my go to scouting method but it was something new and different that I liked.

I sweet talk the women hikers at the trailheads into telling me where they see the majority of deer. They'll talk more if you aren't in hunting clothes and have camera equipment in hand.

I'm a fan of google earth as well. I hunted a new elk area last year and sent a lot of time viewing the area online. I was able to find little unique spots away from where the crowds might be. By the time I put boots on the ground, I felt pretty comfortable with knowing the area. Great tool.

I just put boots to ground and get into the thick covered area, look for springs, old wallows, beds. Thats where they live so thats where I look......oh yeah, and I also got my helicopter license.....its just a tad more spendy than google earth but a heck-of-a-lot more fun!!!
