For a, "Bear gun," I would prefer a short barrel on a rifle. It will make it quick handling, in thick brush and heavy timbered woods where bears are known to reside. I used to be a bear guide here in California, and used a Winchester, Trapper Model, Lever action, because of its short 16 inch barrel and light weight. The 30-30 caliber was on the small side, but I killed lots of 400-600 pound bears as they fought my dogs on the ground with it. Due to clients making bad shots. If you hit them in the neck or head, they will go down!...That rifle should make a super bear gun...I like the idea of a 338 Win Mag Caliber, that should put the hurt on a bear.
