I drew a cow tag for San juan north elk ridge. I have never hunted this area. I had a LE bull tag for San juan 10 years ago but hunted the south part. Just north and west of bears ears. I was wandering if anyone had any experience in this area they could share. I am going to be going at it with a bow. Oct 8th I'm guessing they will still be bugling pretty well around then. I was there early Sept before. Not having a clue as to where to start I'm going to concentrate on the area around horse mountain. What am I looking at for terrain? Looks like 5,000-9,000 feet? Anyways just looking for any info available. Thank you guys in advance.

The San Juan changes dramatically between early September and late October. I've hunted elk there and seen nearly a hundred elk per day and then gone back in early October and spent a week without seeing an elk.

If the rut is early, the elk will have dropped off the top into the dark, nasty canyons and will actually be really hard to find by the time cow season comes around. I haven't looked at the new boundaries, but if your unit includes "The Rockpile" then you will want to start there (37°49'17.10"N 109°30'14.49"W). Good luck and let us know how you do.
