Looking to buy some new boots for an elk hunt this fall in Wyoming. The hunt is planned for Mid-Late October and the AVERAGE lows show to be in the low 30's although colder is surely a possibility.

I've been looking at a lot of different boots and was wondering if anyone had tried the Salomon Quest 4D GTX's and had an opinion on them? This is a DIY backpacking hunt and my buddy and I will be hauling out all of our meat so I definitely want some support but at the same time, don't necessarily want a super stiff, super heavy boot. Also definitely want something waterproof. Breathability is also an issue as my feet tend to get hot and sweat easily.

Thanks!

I have them. They're more substantial than my Renegades but are not close to an 8" Kenetrek. I packed an Elk and a bunch of Antelope without problems. Mine still hold water after my 2014 hunts (I fill them with water after every hunt to test). I like them so far.
I did take extra caution this year with trimming toe nails extremely close and filing a chamfer on the top. They've been on sale for 125ish a cpl times the last several months.

I'm on my 3rd pair. They fit my feet really good. I've used them on 3 solo pack outs of elk (3-5 miles back in). My feet have held up on those trips. I had an issue one year with just sore feet after a 36 hr effort to get a bull out, but I think that was just due to not changing socks and the effort itself (lots of side hilling). I've never tried the kennetreks so I can't speak to the how they compare. That said, these are my go to non-insulated boot. I buy my at REI during the member sale and get use the 20% off coupon. One time the were on sale so I didn't have to use the coupon. If you buy them an REI, you have a year to use them to see if you like them. If not, you can return them with no issues.

Thanks for the info! Do you remember who had them on sale for that price?

Watch on Amazon, I bought some for $100 even though there bright green I don't care!!
I'll definitely do that, thanks. Everywhere I've looked so far seems to have them right around $230. A couple of places have what appears to be last years model for around 140 but they are sold out of most of the sizes

Also was looking at these, do they run true to size? I wear 10, was wondering if that would work? We don't have stores here that have them. Thank!

I normally buy a 13 wide in Renegades and my 4d's are std 13 and fit great. Their regular width must be on the wider side.
The Salomon Quest 4D don't come in wide widths, I wish they did. I wear 10.5 4E New Balance and a 10.5 wide from Merrell, to give an idea of the size of my feet.

The Salomons are a bit too narrow for my feet, particularly through the arch area, but they had plenty of room in the toe box, so they may be a bit large for somebody with skinny feet.

That said, they felt really solid and I was really disappointed that they don't come in wides.

I used them for the first time last year and my only regret was that I didn't get a pair sooner. Size runs true, and I wear a light/mid weight wool sock and have never had a blister even while hiking 15 plus miles a day.

I ordered last years model and only paid 130 bucks for them. I've been wearing them for the last two weeks and they have felt broke in since the first couple days. Loving them so far. I'll be taking them to Wyoming in October for antelope elk and deer so that will be the real test
