Removing epoxy from metal.

Wondering if anybody knows how to remove an epoxy from a parkerized metal finish?

Removed a Lyman 48 sight from a 1903 springfield last night and it appears to have an epoxy based 'pad' underneath.

Would like to remove the epoxy and fill the holes with plug screws.

I would probably not use any of the chemical based removers, as they probably would attack the blueing on the metal too. You might try an auto body shop that specializes in Corvettes. They use a baking soda based blast that will take paint off but not hurt the fiberglass. Worth a try.

I would try heating it a little bit with a small torch. You also might be able to freeze it, and knock it off with a plastic straight edge. Neither of these should hurt the Parkerizing, as it is pretty tough. You may have to refresh the threads in the holes after removing the pad to get the epoxy out of them.
