Hello All!
I've been looking at Wyoming for about 2 weeks straight and trying to retain as much information as possible since we didn't get drawn for Montana. I think I finally narrowed down to Region Y! there are 4 of us going with no preference points. we are all open for applying for the special permit since we already had the money set aside for Montana and that didn't work out. I Just thought I would pick your all's brain and see if that was a good pick to settle on? the area info say's there are a good amount of mule deer around, so were just hoping for some fairly accessible access on the southern half of region Y, I've hunting in SE Montana before and had a blast, were just hoping to get back out west again, all of us are just looking to have a good time and hopefully come home with some meat and good memory's. Thanks for any of your guys help, everyone is so helpful on this site!
Thanks Steve

Y is a decent unit with a lot of young bucks taken. I am not sure I would pay for a special tag for this unit. It just depends on how bad you want to hunt. On my trip in 2017 I took notice on the mule deer at the local processor. Out of the 60 plus bucks I saw there were only two I would consider good bucks. I was shocked at the amount of spike to fork horn bucks I saw people had shot. Nothing wrong with that. I just did not drive 1,600 miles to shoot a smaller deer than I would shoot at home. I can say a lot of the good deer I saw were on private land. I am sure this is the same in a lot of units in the general tag areas. Also like most public land there are a good number of deer hunters. I will also say there is a lot of public land in the Southern units that hold little to no deer.

I've hunted Y for the past 6 years and my group has killed a pile of deer. Lots of young deer and LOTS of hunters. If you only have deer tags, id suggest hunting the last week of season. You'll see lots of deer on private and its very difficult to get access to private land. That said, there are some good bucks killed every year. IMO, not worth the special price unless you're trying to draw it as a second choice and build your preference points.
