Region H as 2nd choice?

I have 4 NR points going into the 2015 draw and I'm wanting to draw either G or H. I'm wondering if I have a shot at drawing H as a 2nd choice if I don't happen to draw Region G as my 1st choice? Or is the only way I'll draw H is if it's my 1st choice?
Thanks!

If you look at last years stats, it took "less than 2 pts." to have a 100% chance to draw a tag in H. Those with 1 pt. got the few remaining. The random draw gets a few, but that would be first choice also. So, to answer your question, you would have no chance as a second choice. Who knows what the point creep will be, but I would guess that you would have a fairly good chance to draw G with 4 pts., and 100% to draw H on a first choice. I would think that by coming up with the special $ in G, it would be pretty much a sure thing also.

It was an 80% chance of drawing G last year with 4 PP...point creep this year possibly less, maybe not though. If u ponied up the extra $$ for special you will draw G. 98% of people with 3 points in the special drew last year and everyone with 4 drew..region H is becoming a about as known as G and drawing it as a second choice I would doubt will happen for ya. Good luck!

If you want a sure bet then put in for Region G special draw or Region H regular draw. I am in the same boat as you and am going to do the special draw for Region G.

Thanks for the info guys. Ya I'll have to make a choice between G in the special draw, or save some money and do H. As far as number of bucks and quality of bucks, is H much worse than G? I know G gets a lot of hype, but I know quiet a few big bucks that have been taken in H... Thoughts?

From what I have found out researching them G gets a lot more resident hunters than H. So you would think there would be more pressure because of the number of hunters. Region G has a lot more land for NR guys to hunt because there isn't much Wilderness Area. I think either unit can and does produce some big bucks. The reason I am going to do G is because the large amount of public land available to NR. Good luck.

I have hunted H both in the Gros Ventre Wilderness (guided), and DIY on public land. So far 100% successful, but haven't broke 160" yet. Maybe I could if my partner hid my ammo for a dew days. I found the areas within a couple miles of the road access was very busy, as well as any major horse trail. I suspect that will be true in G also. I have hunted coyotes on snowmobile in the southern part of G, and there's some nice country there too. With 3 pts., I am sharing with a bud with 1pt., and should draw H. Both areas can produce, and I have seen photos of over 200" bucks that were taken in each unit last year. If you want to do this more than once, I would suggest popping for the G special tag to guarantee the draw, and then start building points so you can hunt in H in a couple years.

We hunted H last year. We were in 5 miles and saw plenty of other hunters, we never tagged anything, but it was 85 degrees and I think the deer were being fairly lazy. I wouldn't worry about the wilderness there I'd more than enough land to hunt. I hear G is way more crowded than H, if that's the case I would stay away and head to H. We did see a couple locals hammer some studs but they knew what they were doing! Lol!

Thanks for the info. Were you guys hunting archery or rifle? I'm planning on focusing on archery and getting back as far as I need to (10+ miles if that's where the bucks are). I've heard the opener of the rifle is pretty crazy up there, but I'm guessing archery isn't nearly as crowded?

We went rifle, I think if I went again it would be archery. A lot less people, or go a couple more days before opener to find some bucks. This was our first backpack hunt so there was a lot we learned that would definitely benefit us for next time.
