Region C Mule Deer

Anyone else hunt region C? Our group of 4 bought leftover tags. We hunt b/w Buffalo and Gillete around the Powder River. How did the deer fare through the winter? Any idea on how the deer levels are? I didnt get out last year, bu the year before we did pretty well.

The deer have seemed to fare pretty well in that area. I drive through Gillette and buffalo all the time. Our winter was super mild so I don't think there was much winter kill at all. The drought is really bad now but the deer seem to be hangin in there.

Thats good news about the winter. We are in a drought here in southern Wisconsin too. We plan to hunt around the powder river / beaver creek branch area. Not sure if your familiar with that area or not.

Love this site......now that I am getting back into western hunting, I have found the Eastmans Mag to be an invaluable tool. My family has hunted Wyoming since the 50's. Mostly on a ranch or 2 b/w sundance and upton, but they are now outfitter controlled. We also hunted on a ranch out by Afton and also in the greys river areas for many years for elk and deer (i was too young though). I am excited to get back into these hunts. I grew up as a kid riding along or listening to all my families stories and all my grandathers hunts. Then i went to college, got married, had kids........and 10 years passed without going on a single western hunt. My grandfather passed away this June.......but he sure did live his life! He shot 31 elk in his lifetime, with a 365" bull out of the greys! Not bad for someone who lived his entire life in WI. Now i realized life is too short to waste a year not doing what I love. 3 years ago went antelope hunting, 2 years ago mulie hunting....missed last year......but now I am determined to never miss a year ever again. Got hunts planned in SD, Colorado, several in WY.....love the wets. And I hope to get my kids into western hunting just like he did for me.

Can't wait for October!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hunt Timing

Question for you North Central WY deer hunters.............

We are finally getting our trip somewhat planned with dates, and we ran into an issue. We are hunting public land/wia along the powder river and some off-shoot creeks. On the West Side of the Powder River the Season ends the 14th i believe, and on the east side it ends on the 20th.

My schedule works with 3-4 days of hunting, 2 days driving (all my schedule allows)..........leaving late Tuesday the 16th or very early Wed the 17th.....hunting Thu,Fri,sat.....coming home sunday the 21st.

the issue is...............we would be limited to East of the Powder River. If we went the week before, we could hunt both sides.

But..........I have heard from people in the area that we talked to on a past hunt (energy company drivers and other non-hunting folk, as well as a guy I know who used to hunt the area in the past)..........that they seem to see more and larger bucks later on, usually after the 15th. As one guy put it bucks seem to "come out of nowhere" after the 15th.

So what do you think is better in a short time strapped hunt...............more land to hunt and find bucks...........or less land but later in the season.

I am leaning toward later in the season, but worried about finding deer or hunter numbers if we are limited to smaller areas.
