how do you determine the length of a bow you need for recurves?

Depends on shooting style and draw length. I have a 56 in recurve and a 64 in longbow. 56 in recurve would probably give taller shooter finger pinch issues . Like a shorter bow I can shoot from kneeling position.Longer bows generally pull smoother, don't stack as much.

This was a few months ago, but if you haven't pulled the trigger on anything yet, I got into traditional archery last year, and I dealt with John at Twig Archery. They ship everywhere, and John does a really good setup on everything before it leaves his shop. I called with a few questions as a complete beginner to the traditional world, and he took at least an hour on the phone giving me advice on everything from arrow selection to practice techniques.
