Planning on replacing my old dead portable I kept in the camp box.

My truck radio (Explorer) failed long ago and I just want something to check news, a ball game or some such while in the field.

Any suggestions ?

Depending on where you are going to hunt, you could be far enough away from a radio station that you won't get a signal. This is especially true with AM stations and in the daytime. At night you usually can get some broadcasts which could be a long ways away. FM reception is usually much better.

I subscribe to Sirius satellite radio and can get anything anywhere. You might look into getting a replacement radio for your truck and subscribing to Sirius, it is fairly inexpensive, I pay around $20.00/mo for 2 vehicles.

I'll second that. If your truck has Sirius built in they have a special that gets you 6 months for $24. If you don't have it in the vehicle already, they make a portable unit that hooks up in the truck and you can pull the receiver off like a faceplate, hook it up to a speaker system and take it into the house or the tent. Pretty sweet deal but ball games can be hit an miss as is news/weather.

If you want reliable tunes of a certain genre or station of your choice, this set up can't be beat.

I carry a Grundig/Eton AM/FM/Shortwave radio, uses 2 AA, also has an alarm on it, if you don't want to pay a subscription. They make some nice portable radios for under $100, a few ounces on up, depending on what you want to spend and carry. Only thing they don't seem to include is weather channels except on their "emergency" type radios that come with hand cranks, flashlights, strobes, can openers and other doodads that I don't need or want.

Thanx gents. I'll probably go with CC Skywave.
If you end up getting one, let us know what you think. I heard the commercials for them on the Art Bell (now George Nori) show and seen them on the internet, but never got around to getting one. I'm mainly curious to see if they really get any better reception than the other portable shortwave radios.

Wound up getting the CCRadio2E Enhanced Radio.

We were happy to get pretty fair AM coverage Election Night and two or three FM stations in daylight. (NPR was hilarious the day after the election ). Our camp was more than 270 road miles from the Portland metro area. Opted for the 2E after seeing how small the CC Skywave is.
