With all respect... be very mindful of this because there are some hot topics in there that could be a mess for the future of Montana...

I don't see the shoulder season working in most areas. The elk are not stupid and they will move onto property where they will be safe, which I see becoming more and more towards the privatization of the elk when the land owners can then charge whatever fee they want to allow "access" to the game. Not to mention that putting pressure on the elk deep into the winter is not going to benefit the elk population one bit, why do you think a lot of winter ranges throughout the west are closed during the winter, so not to pressure the game when simply surviving is hard enough with most winters. I know that a lot of elk around the White Sulpher Springs area are on the National Forest land right now, where they have never wintered before, and where they are safe because hunters can't hunt that land. If the fish and game want to extend the already long seasons we have, then just extend the season and call it what it is, and let the hunters hunt the game on all public land.

I have another theory on this shoulder season. Instead of killing all of the elk in Units that are over objective, how about we start taking those elk and introducing them into units that are way under objective. EX.... Our Yellowstone herd. It needs all the help it can get. I'm not a biologist but most of these cows shot during shoulder season are going to have fetuses in them. Not my idea of gutting an animal out. Think really hard on the future here.
Best Regards Travis

You are absolutely right, most cows will have a little pink calf in them when you gut them out. I think the late hunts have a place when elk are tearing up hay stacks and those ranchers allow access during the normal season, then they should be allowed to have people come harvest the elk in the winter. I just am skeptical with the way the current system has been set up.

The one thing I am confused about the proposed shoulder seasons is do you have to draw a B shoulder tag for the district you want to hunt or can it be done with a general tag? A few of the region 2 districts have both a regular cow tag and a supplemented shoulder season as well so it's really confusing

I just found out that some of these shoulder seasons that begin in August will also run through the archery season, so you will have people trying to bow hunt while there are people blasting away at cows with rifles at the same time. That will be fun...
