I am heading to SW Colorado in a couple of days for an archery elk hunt. I will be hunting GMU 71 & 711 mainly , I hunted the 2nd rifle here last year and familiar with some of these area's .If I should harvest an elk within my first few days there , I would like to try pronghorn. Are there any good public areas near here that you would recommend. I am driving from Louisiana and staying in Delores . Thanks.

Nope.....I am guessing that you don't have an antelope tag and there are no over the counter tags for goats in the whole state. I live a short distance south of the zones you are hunting elk in and there are really no goat tags to draw for until you get further north near Grand Junction or east by Alamosa. Just north of 71/711 is Dry Creek Basin and there are antelope there, but no hunting as the population is pretty small. Good luck on your elk hunt, weather still pretty hot with PM thunder showers.

Colorado Cowboy- Not true, you can buy an OTC Archery antelope. It is buck only from Aug 15th-Aug 31 then Sept 1-15 it is either sex. This tag is valid in many of the units in the SW part of the state including 71 and 711.
beau- Good luck on you elk hunt and if you tag out early I would recommend locating some huntable goats before buying a tag. Make sure there are enough around to hunt and that you can get on some ground. Good luck and keep us posted on how it goes.

You are correct....my mind is a little slow this am. I am a rifle hunter and my comments were made in that context. Rifle pronghorn tags are tough to draw in areas with a lot of public land and there are none in 71/711. I have 11 ppts and still can't get where I want. I've done a lot of deer hunting in the Dry Creek Basin area and have seen a few good pronghorn bucks there. Good Luck!

I wanted to clarify. I am hunting public land for my elk , I am hunting San Jaun national forest. The places I have seen here don't look like like antelope terrain and that is my question . I know this is a big area and I have not seen but a portion of it , but there are pronghorn tags for this area so there must be something I'm missing. Thanks agin for any input.

The area I've seen antelope in is in 70 and there are no OTC tags there. If there are any in 711 it would be out of the NF to the NW. That area is really dry and typical antelope country. Got to be careful as there are a lot of goats in Utah west of there. No real way to know if you are in Utah unless you know the area pretty well.
