Have a question about deer points. I can't seem to find the answer, can you transfer points to family? Does it have to be husband wife thing or can any family members tranfer points to you? Thanks!

You can't transfer them, but you can party with someone (up to 6 in a party) on your application. The G&F adds all the points together and divides that by the number in the party to get your average that is not rounded up or down. The entire party is then given one number for a chance to draw the unit you apply for. If drawn, everyone in the party gets a tag and if not drawn everyone gets a refund of their money, minus the $14 per person application fee.

Thanks, didn't know if you could transfer them to someone else if the person with the points didn't want a tag that had points.

Too much room for abuse, if they were transferrable, my wife, mother, grandmother, and aunt would all be heavily invested in points. :D
That's still happening, they just have the relative pull the trigger too! Lots of guys put half there family in for licenses the family member may not even care much about so they can go on more top quality hunts. I wish there was a way to stop this too.

Yep, and it's impossible unless the GW actually sees who pulls the trigger! The person would have to be stupid enough to have the tag from the other person and that person not be there with them to really get nailed. That's one reason the license part has to be signed to validate it and then the carcass tag isn't signed until the animal is killed and it's notched out and signed in case anyone has wondered why it's that way.

I wasn't talking about having someone else's tag! Was wondering about if you could use an immediate family members points. I would never take someone else's tag if so you would be in deep doo doo.

I do agree, I was just wondering.

Yeah sharing points would cause a mess for the people who abuse it. My nephew has a couple points and can't go, so his brother was wondering if he could get his points, but he will have to keep buying points until he can go. Guess little brother is out of luck!;)

I suppose in a state where they average points on a group application, you could effectively transfer some of another persons points. If I spent all my points last year, and had been buying for a nonhunter as well, I could apply the next year with the nonhunter and effectively acquire half their points (and the nonhunter wouldn't even have to come with). That would get expensive, though. No system is foolproof I guess.

Point averaging for a group application is a very effective way of letting someone you hunt with get extra points. Of course you lose some of your points (and the $$$ you spent getting them), but still can salvage a hunt that you and a partner might not be able to take without the help. Several years ago one of my hunting buddies didn't have enough points to get an antelope tag in the unit we wanted to hunt. We put in for it together and 2 of my points that went to raising our party average got us the tags. I was happy to do and we had a blast, with him getting his first goat.

I partied once with a guy from Idaho for antelope and we drew a tag that would have taken me at least another year to draw on my own. The deal was that I would put him in my good area and make camp for us. It worked out well and he shot a buck in the high 70s and mine went right at 80". I tried the same thing again with a disabled guy from Ohio for a deer hunt and we didn't draw the tags because the G&F cut the NR allotment by 50 tags for the unit and the draw just barely missed getting into our PP pool that only had a few people in it.
