This Model 70 30:06 was given to me by my father several years ago as a gift for a job promotion. I started using the gun as a teenager and killed my first Deer, Elk and Antelope with it before Dad passed it on to me. The gun is a little on the heavy side but is a tack driver. I decided to have it brought back to as new as condition as I could. I sent the gun to Kevin Weaver at Weaver Rifles in Peyton Colorado. It was re-blued, refinished, checkering redone, new recoil pad, new scope and mounts installed. I recently checked the serial number with Winchester and discovered it was made in 1953, the year I was born.Model 70 008.jpgModel 70 009.jpgModel 70 010.jpg

Wow that is exceptional and what a neat way to honor your father and his memory! That was money well spent. Some might grouse about you taking a pre-64 and refinishing it, but you brought her back to life and obviously plan on using her, just like she was built to do!

Chiefgobbler I'm not trying to jack your post and hoping this is adding to it. My father died a couple of years ago and before he died he had told me that he was giving me a couple thousand dollars when he went and he did not want me to spend that money on bills or the family. My dad knew that I seldom do anything for myself and it is usually just the family and I do without which is okay by me, but he wanted me to do something nice for myself such as a custom rifle or something.

I found a Model 70 Classic Sporter in .270 and bought it and took it to my gunsmith. He trued it up and did all his magic and put a 24" Shilen barrel on her chambered in .280 Ackley Improved. I am so tickled to have this beauty and I cannot wait to start working up loads. I think our father's would be very proud of both of us! Congratulations on a fantastic project and it turned out just perfect!!!

6mm,

I am fortunate that my Father is still here. He does not hunt anymore so I do miss him being in hunting camp. I know I have missed opportunities to say thank you or show appreciation to those that the matter most over the years. This time I wanted to do something to say thanks so he could appreciate it. I enjoyed the surprise on his face when I showed him the gun. I can never repay the life lessons he passed on to me. However, I can pass them on to my kids and grandkids. I can't wait to get it out and shoot the gun again.

Happy for you. Your words were very well written and the rifle is beautiful.
