Powder Burn Rate/Speed Chart?

Seeking an up-to-date powder burn rate/speed chart, as a reloading reference; of course I will start with published recipes for my reloads-more just wanted to compare the different powders listed for a given recipe based on powder speed/burn rate.

I had some wonky stuff happen developing my last load as detailed in my thread from earlier this fall. Excellent discussion there; and I ended up trying what was suggested as a faster powder for my 22" bbl, a powder I had on hand; but along with the wonky velocity, I got the most accurate load I ever developed; albeit a little slower than I liked. Still need to contact Accurate powder to see if they have anything to add beyond the other theories discussed.

I realize a purely faster powder may not be the immediate cure-all for my .280 REM 22" bbl model 70, but it seems like something logical to try, esp with how finicky it seems short bbls-mine included- can be. With so many variables, it seems logical that the powder that worked best in the load recipes in a test gun, may not yield the best results in another gun.

I will be heading to PA next week and will have access to a well stocked reloading store where I can buy almost any powder out there and not worry about shipping it to Iowa, by bringing it back with me. Hence, my interest in picking up a couple cans of something new to try.

Regards,

This is the one I have saved, but it does not have Reloder 16, 23, and 26. And I use both Reloder 16 and Reloder 26. I know 16 is really close to H4350. I'm using it for my 30/06 and my 338 Win. Mag. The Reloder 26 I use for my 270, and get more velocity than I ever could with H4831. I'm getting 3,100 fps with a 140 grain bullet using 60.5 grains of RL-26.

Just curious what gun shop you’ll be near here in PA? I was just at several near me including Grice’s, searching for US869 for my new 6.5-300 and nobody had it, had to pay hazmat fees equivilent to the powder price.

That 270 pill is smoking pretty good bdan68. I load RL26 for my 7mag. 145gr copper LRX at 3,200 f/s. I'm using 63ish gr off top of my head.

' Tim,

My inlaws live a few minutes outside Ebensburg.

I found out about this place a couple years ago, and ever since, get my powder there when I am home visiting.

https://cacassociatesinc.com

They are on the south side of route 22, behind the Martins Bros convenience store in a small industrial park. Its not really a store per se, there is a counter where you bring your list and they pull it for you, like an old fashioned supply house.

'Bdan,

Thanks for the reference- some food for thought as I plan next steps in my reloading drama.

The end goal for me are a couple of loads with the highest sensible performance out my .280 REM mdl 70: a deer/antelope one and a little heavier one for elk.

Definitely give Reloder 26 a try- IF you can find any. I stocked up a year or two ago when it was more readily available, and have about 5 pounds. But it seems to be scarce right now. It's a slower burning powder though, and you said you wanted a fast powder. Reloder 16 should be good too, and like I said it's real close to 4350. It can be difficult finding data for the new Alliant powders. I used Berger's data when I first tried RL-26 in my 270. I see they have some data for the 280 Remington as well.

I have found living where I do that you need to buy the powder that you like in the large containers, be it 5lbs or 8lbs at a time when you find it. The nearest store that actually stocks powders is 60 miles away and you never know just what they might have, other than that it is a 120 mile drive on a chance you can find a store with what you want.

I have also found that Natchez Shooters supplies will run hazmat free days on shipping of powders and primers and if they have what you want at that time you can get some good deals on the powders. You just have to sign up for their emails and they will let you know when it is happening.

While sitting here waiting for the Steelers game to start, I was noodling on this powder burn rate stuff a little more, ranking powder speeds from the list and the ones I've already tried (RE-19, AA4350) in working up that load I posted extensively about a few threads back; where it seemed I hit nearly a brick wall velocity plateau; and then a consistent velecity reduction.

I re-visited Alliant's online reloading tables and noticed that the data was different for their 145 gr .280 Rem recipes from what I downloaded from the Speer website; and what I remember on Alliant's website this summer. You may recall I was trying to use the Speer recipe for RE-19; and while I reached 2,800 fps, accuracy was poor.

Alliant doesn't include RE-19 nor AA4350 in their .280 Rem recipes for the Speer 145 BTSP. For the 145 SP, only RE-19 and RE-22 are listed. It seems the Speer data is a combined list of recipes for both the BTSP & SP; whereas the Alliant data seems to separate them; and may be changed from what was previously listed. The only powders in recipes listed now by Alliant for the 145 BTSP are RE-16, RE-17, 4000-MR. RE-16, 17 are both faster than the RE-19 I tried; no idea on the 4000-MR; but reading it's description it sounds slower. Based on the chart, my AA4350 results, and suggestions, right now I am leaning towards the 100V and either RE-16 or IMR4350 for the next round of this.
