The questions that I get are usually worded like this:

Hi, I see that you seam to know unit XYZ quite well. I drew a animal tag for that unit but don't know that much about it and would like to get all the help that I can. I don't want any honey holes but where is it best to hunt it?

Any help that you can provide will be appreciated.

I'm pretty good about giving info. I drew an area 40 deer tag in Idaho a few years ago. Posted up on a few forums looking for info. A couple guys even pm'd me their phone #s and said to call when you get over here. Ironically the best advice I received was from a ranch kid who was getting gas. I got my maps out and he circled a few places and said I've seen good deer here and here in the past couple weeks.

I've helped 2 guys get sheep and 2 guys get goats; I gave these guys really good intel because I figured I would not be hunting sheep/goats again. After the seasons I started dropping e-mails to these guys to get feedback and I would get something like "Oh yeah, I meant to contact you but lost your e-mail" or something similar. I gave 2 guys pretty vague info just this year on units I've hunted in the past and asked for feedback but have heard nothing. That kind of thing has happened numerous times over the years. I think most guys that have hung around on this forum any length of time are basically at least half ways decent human beings, and really would like to help a guy out if he asks for help, but you start feeling just kinda "used" after somebody won't even send you a quick thanks for the info and tell you a little bit about their hunt.

Ain't that the truth.

I think we are all on the same page here. Just use your best judgment when considering giving out info.

I have both given and received information from forum members. I always provide feedback about my hunt and thank anyone who may have assisted. I've made some lifelong friends this way. Unfortunately, the feedback from those I've helped has been scarce by most of them, but a few have been great. Those folks become your friends.
I always walk those in need through the process, not just provide coordinates. You can usually tell when they are actually looking at maps and researching and coming back with good questions or are simply bs'n. If it's the latter, I stop providing any more detailed information. I also never divulge information on the open forum, but once it leaves your mouth/keyboard, all bets are off.

yeah I'VE GOTTEN THOSE ALSO. I find them humorous.

why on earth do folks put in for areas they Know nothing about.

hunting new areas is great but for crying out loud ,why put in for it before doing a little research.

seriously how do they decide where to hunt? do they just open the regs and pick the hunt their finger lands on ,like the killer did with the phone book in the movie ,THE JERK?

Being pretty new to hunting I've asked for help. But I didn't ask for specific unit info, it was mostly more of the "Hey, how the hell do I hunt these things". I have had some conversations with another forum member on here about a unit we both had never been to but both had a cow tag in this year. I put in for the unit as 2nd choice and it looked like it had good harvest results and wasn't too awful far from home. I think we both were very willing to help the other out and were even going to try to go hunt together. As luck would have it, we both shot bulls in different units so we're both a little short on freezer space. I'd still like to head out and learn the unit a bit more as I saw a ton of elk and it's an easy draw for a cow. Anybody want to email me and ask what unit? haha

I've had similar experiences that you guys have had. Some times they'll get back to you and let you know how they did and other times you never hear from them again. I only ask in return that they let me know how their hunts went.

These days many hunts are considered "once in a lifetime" type hunts and are very hard to draw tags. I don't mind helping a guy out when I can, especially if he wants to do a DIY type hunt. It's pretty hard for guys to put boots on the ground in many of these hunting units when it takes 10 or 15 years or more to draw. It gets frustrating when you never hear from them again. I don't think it's too much to ask for a line or two and maybe a photo.
