PM's asking for information.

Been getting a lot of PMs from people not registered and no posts on the Forum asking for information. I usually won't give them anything until they are officially a Forum member and have introduced themselves. Even then I keep pretty closed mouth, it just kinda irritates me.

Just wondering, how does everyone handle this?

They have to be registered to send a PM don't they?

I get quite a few also. They have zero post and are recently registered. I usually just ignore them figuring that they have sent PM's out to a number of members.

Perhaps they need to set a # of post before a PM can be sent. It doesn't need to be too many. Perhaps 5 or so or at least 1 in the introduction forum.

I don't mind helping someone out , when and if I can but I usually keep info pretty general and don't give away my hotspots.
any info I have on weather or hotels, meat processors and things of that type, I am more then willing to share.

I prefer to know someone before I ask for their help but not all are that way.
I try to look at it like I once needed help and some were willing to teach and or help me. if I do the same , maybe one day ,they will also.

what irritates me is when they never bother to follow up and let you know how their hunt went.

I've been on this Forum for awhile and have built relationships with some members. We do trade information. One member gave me some information on an antelope unit here in Colorado that resulted my filling my tag with one of the best bucks I have ever killed. I also have given information on some of my favorite units as they now take too damn many points and at my age (76), I'll never be able to draw them again. These relationships are not born overnight.

I've actually been thinking about writing about a very brief article (I guess it could just be a long winded post) about this issue. After giving some vague advice to a couple people this year and asking for feedback after their hunt which I did not get, I think I'm going to decline any requests for any information from low post count people. This is not the first year this has happened. Additionally, everyone needs to be aware that ANYTHING you post on a forum like this can be found by ANYONE, whether they are registered here or not. So if you give someone some info and include a road/trail/drainage/or even unit# in the post, don't be surprised to see 5 times as many people in the area come fall.

If I give any detailed information it is in a PM, which can only be viewed and read by the person you sent it to.

I agree it's annoying when they have no posts. If they contribute to the forum and share stories and I am more than willing to help with what little I do know. I ignored 1 guy last year and he has become a good member who seems courteous and helpful. OOPS SORRY!

I remember sending you some PMs a couple years ago and you steered me away from what was probably a bad unit. Many thanks CC!

I've given some advice (hopefully good), and gotten some good advice from others. I've probably given too much information through the years, but what the hell. Where I hunt is public, and if you don't want to put the miles on the boots, you aren't going to see much. And things change.

In college we hunted a 1,000 acre public marsh in south central Nebraska. Used to kill a limit of ducks before 10 AM daily. Sadly it wasn't other hunters that messed that spot up, it was the Army Corps of Engineers. They decided to "make improvements" to the area...as of today it's great for pheasants, but holds no water. Dumb-asses.

I'd like to connect with someone for Mule and/or Elk trip in the future. Most of my hunting buddies only want to chase waterfowl. My brother would hunt with me, but he's a school teacher and can't get the days off work.

I helped a guy with detailed info on archery elk. He and his dad tagged out, he gave me a thank you pm, pictures, and the story about their hunt. Was really nice, but I've given help to a bunch of other people, and heard nothing back, ever. That gets frustrating when your just curious how their hunt went.

I agree this can be frustrating!!! Many people want free information and then disappear into thin air. Ive kind of decided Im not going to spend the time to go into great detail anymore but will help with general/ basic questions

I tend to only give details to the folks who are active on the forum, and just general info to the people who have only a few posts. Heck Retterath and I got to know each other through the forum and he ended up traveling up to my hometown and we hunted spring bears together last year and he got a dandy.

Very tough subject, this one is. Because I agree with what everyone is saying and I feel the same. What makes it tough is I only had a couple post a few years ago when a member here helped me out with some very good info for my friends son sheep tag. It made me want to get more involved with trying to help guys that asked about things I did know about. I just hope I got back to the guys that helped me in a way that made them happy in return.
It does suck when nobody does reply about what did happen on a trip you thought you were helping out with. That is why I read so much here, if not out in the outdoors reading about others encounters is what helps encourage more learning towards new experiences

Every year as soon as draw results come out. People start asking where they should go and they expect you to tell them even though they have put zero work into scouting or talking to people before they put in.

It may make a person feel good to help another hunter out but you may screw another hunter by sending this stranger into a area. I do think it's good to help people but not with any specific spots and telling people that a hunt is good will hurt your chances of drawing another tag.

I do a ton of my own research from data and through personal friends before putting in for a tag or general hunt. Then I scout it.

This forum is here to help the new hunters and the veterans.

But these guys that just come on here and pm members for info without being active on the forum is a no no. You guys can handle them as you see fit with respect to everyone. This is one reason why we have a 50 post count minimum to sell in the Garage sale section. Guys will just become a member to sell stuff and leave.

IMO if you ask for info on a PM and you are not a contributing member of the forum you will not get info from me.

Thanks all

Happy Holidays

I agree with the general concensus here, but it does remind me to thank some contributing members who have been beyond helpful to me. ColoradoCowboy..you're the best, and I hope to meet you someday. JPSeveland, no longer posts, but he gave me great CO deer info, and I even met with him on a trip west. gypsumreaper; I'm waiting for you to be active again so I can thank you for all your help. And, a final thanks to JimP..who actually looked me up on the mountain, let me use his shower and air compressor, and shared some great stories with me. There are others, and I appreciate all that you have shared.

Message Trent or I if this continues to be a major issue. I am assuming this isn't bots, but they are asking intelligent questions?
