Need some help with an antelope area for 2018. Started planning 3 years ago. To my surprise my grandson couldn't get preference points until he is 12, which is next September. So I have 1.5 preference points for each of us. My wife and I hunted 72 in 2010 and were spoiled. Now it's not an option without more points. She and I hunted 9 during the blizzard of 2013 and got to do very little looking around. I've looked at 46 and the managed areas or 9 and the WIA's. Is there something better to put in for with 1.5 points. Also has to be the 2nd week of October to match his fall break and deer hunting the 15th.

Thanks for any help!

We tagged out in 5 days in unit 16 on deer and antelope (6 of us). Save your points and get 16 on a second choice. There's plenty of land there and if you're okay with packing out an antelope they were everywhere.

Were you on BLM? How was access in 16? Thanks!

Yes all public land there's a large patch of BLM just west of the powder river. Their are a few places on powder river road to pull off and get into BLM land. Along I90 their are some smaller sections where we saw herds on the boarder hanging out. Their is also a WIA on Tipperary rd that gives you access to a couple thousand acres of private and state/BLM land. The state says limited public land on their website. If you're a road hunter it's not for you. If you don't mind getting away from the truck theirs a good chance you won't see another hunter the whole time you're there.

Wait to decide after winter. You have until May 31 to apply wait and see if any winter kill across the state.
46 is not a bad area but may have better options up, north with those PP.
Grandson can get PP at age 11 but not hunt til 12.

PM's might be better way to get info without affecting your draw odds. Many will be in your boat with few points and looking for easy draw info .

I wish I could take my son on an antelope hunt. Less license cost for youth. My biggest problem. Hunting is second to football and antelope is right in the middle of football season. Good luck on drawing a tag for the grandson.

Yep....all thru HS & college I didn't get to hunt in the fall because of football. But other hunting opportunities are there after football, especially upland game birds & waterfowl.

Yup, once in a lifetime opportunities with sports. Those go away once you graduate.

There are some antelope seasons that go into Nov. perhaps one of those units would work if you can draw it. Wintering antelope are very interesting to hunt, big groups and lots to look at. They do start dropping horns in Nov though. Also archery seasons open in Aug.
