Pioneer Mtns GMU Idaho

Hey guys,

Just curious if anyone has any experience in the Pioneer regions (36a,49,50) Idaho hunting mule deer. I don't want any honey holes, just some experiences, good, bad, and ugly.

I'll be elk hunting there this year, but I'll also have a deer tag in my pocket. I plan to hunt the area for deer in the October general season, unless I got lucky during archery season.

I've never hunted that far south before, I'm always in the panhandle. Have a scouting trip planned in July.

I've never hunted there personally but my brother-in-law lives and hunts in 49. We talk and he says in October general deer it's very pressured. He has shown me a picture or two of some good bucks taken by friends of his there but this is the exception of course. Like anywhere else during general season your success will depend on your effort, tactics (try to get away from other hunters), and mostly pure luck. Best of luck.

Did you mean 39 or was that a mistake? 39 looks to be one of the busiest general deer areas in Idaho.

He may have meant 36 and 36A... I have hunted all three units in the Pioneer Zone. Lots of pressure and surprisingly low deer numbers in my experience. I have seen a couple of 140" class four points taken during the rifle season, that's about it. Honestly it looks like great deer country but the numbers just aren't there. Weird.
