Paunsagunt Archery Deer

I have 15 NR points and am seriously considering burning these for one NR Paunsagunt archery deer tag this year. Could be as long as 5 years for me to get a rifle or mzl tag there and those hunts are not slam dunks. I enjoy archery better anyway, but I've never archery hunted for mulies. Have a lot of elk experience. Can anyone tell me about the archery deer hunt there, and if you think it would be a good value for 15 points? Thanks.

I have never hunted this area, but have a friend who did a couple of years ago. I don't recall all of the details of his hunt, but I'm pretty sure that he ran into alot of access issues. I would really take a hard look at land ownership for this area. 15 points is alot to burn.

I've gotten some input on other sites, but nobody has mentioned access as being an issue. Did your friend hunt the archery season? Deer are supposed to be migrated out of there by the rifle hunt.

So I called him and the deal was he got into a couple of really nice bucks that were crossing back and forth between private and public. His complaint wasn't about the unit so much as getting at the deer he wanted. He said other than those couple of deer no access problems. Sorry for the initial bad info.

np, I always check out those private/public borders on my hunts. Need to be aware of all options.

i would stat applying, good success rate, and the fact that you are dealing with "bonus points" and not preference points it is not a give that you will pull the tag. that is what i like about utah, there is allways a chance, even with no points, but 15 points sure gives you some advantage.

After completing my research, I decided to commit and submitted my Utah application yesterday. I ended up speaking with 2 guys that had the only NR preference tag for the hunt last year. He drew with 13 points. I have 15 so it should be a slam dunk. There are actually 2 NR regular lottery tags there, one going in the preference draw, that I should get. Extremely unlikely anyone would drop down from the rifile elligible 16 point pool. The tag should be mine. I already changed 10 other apps to BP only, or to a later hunt choice.

Found out there will be at least eleven auction tag holders with this tag, compared to only two of us Regular Joe's. What is going on in Utah the entire state should be ashamed of. Raping those who have paid and waited their turn. The auction tags sold for an average of $10,500 to fat cat line cutters. Don Peay/SFW sucks. And he can roll up AZHB2072 and shove it where the sun don't shine.

This is such a dilemma for me too. You save points for so many years that you really want the hunt to be a success. Especially with all the time & money invested! I can have plenty of unsuccessful hunts for much cheaper in my home state! Lol!!! Archery almost always takes less points so it's tempting to try and pull that tag instead. I would always rather archery hunt, but also want a successful hunt which is way more likely in the rifle season. Sounds like you've already made your decision... best of luck to you!!!
