Last week my wife and I were on a little walk with the dogs out to the desert behind our house. On the way there, my wife noticed a dove struggling in a palo verde tree. Upon closer inspection, we noticed it's neck had actually gotten bound up by a thin branch. If you have never seen a palo verde tree, think a mesquite with green bark but all kinds of nasty little thorns.

I think we had spooked it and in trying to fly off, it was unlucky in its clearing the tree. I snapped this picture real quick and finally found a long enough stick to dislodge it. It did fly away but not far; it went behind a cinder block wall and not sure how it fared. I guess getting eaten by a cat is better than slowly suffocating on a thorny branch.

Goes to show, nature can be very cruel.
