Pack weights

Starting to get ready for scouting season and I was thinking that I have never actually weighed my full pack. I'll hopefully put it together this week and get a total scouting pack and hunting pack weight.

I was wondering what do you guys have for total pounds of gear you take in on a backpack hunt? Obviously this varies on trip length and weather.

Also does anyone do anything unique/interesting to cut down on weight?

Thanks!

All kinds of stuff. Have even been known to trim straps etc.

Your base weight consists of your pack, your shelter, and sleeping gear. That is where the largest percentage of weight usually is. Of those I think pack weight is the most important to trim simply because the pack is always on you while other gear may be left at camp once you're set up.

With a Paradox Evo 4800 at 3 lbs 12 oz plus a SO LBO at 24 oz and EE quilt at 28 oz my base weight is under 8 lbs with a pad.

I'm aiming for a total pack weight of under 35 with water and food this year. That is for September.

Rockchucker, you must have water at your destination. At that weight, you wouldn't be toting much water....are you?
I believe water is 8lb per gallon.

I count everything in my pack weight and I mean every little thing. I will be posting my packlist with the weight and items in a few weeks. I pack in for 7-10 days at a time so my weight is a little more than most. Last year I was at 58lbs. that includes everything from bow quiver, release, food, 1qt water (to get me to the next water) etc. I have been trimming it down for the past few years and have knocked off a lot of weight. I hate to say it but most of the weight I have cut has been due to getting newer lighter smaller equipment. Once I get to where I set camp I loose over 1/2 of that weight so my day pack is down to the low 20s.
Every year for the past few years I have left quite a few things at home. I always tell myself if you didn't use it over the past few years don't take it.
Years ago for 7-10 days with all my older gear I was close to 75 lbs at full pack in weight. Last year was 58lbs this year I will be closer to 50 (I hope).

You can loose quite a bit of weight by getting rid of knife cases, removing excess strap length, flash light cases original packing for food etc. Instead of taking four gamebags take two for the first pack out then collect a few more at the truck. If there is water in the area bring in just enough to get you to the first water then refill. Get energy efficient electronics such as a LED flashlight these will save you in battery weight.

You sound like me, last year my pack weighed right at 75lbs for a 7 day trip, after packing that 4 miles up and down the Crazies, I got lean quick, hiked back out to the vehicle and dropped 20plus lbs off mid week, never again!.

I'm at about 60 lbs right now. But after some new equipment purchases this year and elimination of a couple items I hope to be under 50 lbs also. I'll be posting an updated list also in the near future.

Bonecollector, I filter water along the way, and usually carry 2-4 liters. I'm projecting 38 lbs right now with 2 liters of water and food for 7 days. I think I might be able to get that down to 35. That doesn't include bow, binos, etc that I'm wearing or carrying - only stuff in the pack.

I have an excel spreadsheet that lists every piece of gear with the weight, and whether it's carried, worn, or in the pack. I can get my base weight (7.8 lbs), pack weight, and skin out weight- I weigh the clothing I'll be wearing as well. My hunting weight will be in the low to mid 20's after I drop camp.

If yours is a 7 day pack I would love to see your pack list. Maybe I can get some ideas. I just cant seem to get the weight down to sub 50 for a 7-10 day hunt.

Over the years, I've been able to get my pack weight down to 54 lbs for a 10 day mule deer hunt at 12,000'. Most of the wright comes from food to sustain the amount days in the high-country.
