Onx Hunt Map cards or Trax Map GPS SD cards? and which model GPS?

Wanting to upgrade old Garmin GPS to newer model with SD card capability. Has anyone have experience with either Onx Hunt SD cards for GPS or the Trax cards?

Also, which model GPS to use. I would like a larger color screen, mid priced with a SD card slot, preferably Garmin.

What does the 24K or like 100K scale mean?

It seems like a lot has changed with many options since the ETrex model.

I use OnX only. Use them in our Garmin 530Hcx's. What I like about OnX is their support, ease of use and detail. I can use the map on my PC and transfer information over to my garmin. Helps a lot with E-scouting.....

With Garmin discontinuing the 530 models the next unit I would buy would be a 655 or 655t. It is touch screen which has me concerned because I abuse (or use) my equipment. But it also has all the features I like.

24K or 100k refers to the map scale. Same as a paper topo in a 7.5k quadrangle. I think of it like a birdseye view, 100k is higher from above where as 24k is closer and more detail. Of course I could be completly wrong on that....

I am not as tech savy when it comes to maps, but there are some folks on this site that are. They will have very good input for you. If you haven't tried some searches already, do that as well.....

The thing to remember about the map scales for quad maps is the scale is typically in feet:feet, not inch:feet. So on a 24k map, 1ft = 24,000 feet, etc. The 7.5 Minute, which refers to Lat/Long, Quadrangles which show the most detail of the two are a 24k scale and the 30x60 Minute Quadrangles are 100k scale. You want 24k for any backcountry use IMO. 100k will not give the level of detail that you want. 100k is better for through hikes where you need to plan a long route through an area.

Oh and OnX cards are great for hunting boundaries and property lines. If all you need is a 24k topo they are freely available on the web. No need to spend $$$ on them.

I bought the OnX chip for my garmin when I moved out to Western Wyoming 2 years ago. Love it! As stated above they have great support and keep the maps updated. It has saved me a lot of tire rubber and boot leather. I pair it with Garmin basecamp and upload the birds eye images of my hunt areas or spots I want to check out onto my gps. Having the topo lines over the satellite images really helps with locating water etc. I have used it to find ways around private land that has blocked off forest service that had previously had roads to it. I don't have experience with the other service your talking about but OnX has been great for me.

Sounds good RSHusker. I ordered the OnX chip and plan on trying it out as you suggested. This year I have some hunts around private land and one hunt where I can only hunt on private. Being able to see waterholes getting a better idea of terrain should be worth the price!

On x maps are nice. I've used them in Wyoming and Nebraska. The one downside is they dont' include the walk in areas which can be pretty annoying since in some places walk in area make up a large % of the accessible land. Supposedly they do include it in Kansas and Nebraska now so I am going to send my chip in for an update. I'd like to see them add the public roads to their data.

On x maps also offers a app for your phone that is pretty affordable and more convenient for some hunters. Recently had a promotion where if you sign up for a RMEF yearly membership you got the app for free.

I saw another company that copied this is Trimble.

Many states game and fish departments are now giving you a download that includes the accessible lands for free. This includes places like SD, NE, and KS. I'm sure more states will be doing the same moving forward.
