I couldn't hold out any longer! Hoping to have one hell of a year. Maybe this year some of the hunters can help with posting pics and stories since I'm not the most savy with that fang dangled stuff. Here's to big bears and good times!

Each year we've been seeing more good bears taken and more houndsmen. This could be the year to hit the quota. Last bear taken last year was around December 14th, problem bear on a ranch. The last bear I caught with dogs was right at thanksgiving. The bear movement really slows down come November but there's still movement. I've got some good friends and houndsmen ready to help out and catch some bruisers. Going to go hike around tomorrow and check out some over looked areas and get the dogs some exercise. Looking for lions and scouting for bear sign.

Only sign I found was pinions will have pinenuts. Other than tons of bones back in some header canyons and fresh deer sign it wS a nice walk. I've got lots of spots to explore and check and it's way too early anyways but I'm having fun and so are the dogs. 2 9 week old pups made the loop today, surprised I didn't end up with them in my pack.

So why is it to early? Are the bears out roaming around? Or do they just hole up somewhere eating but waiting for the nuts to drop? Ha that sounds bad but you know what I mean.

This time of year they are roaming and feeding, grasses, grubs and such. Fall hunting season coincides with the pinenuts dropping (or really close) but they will start eating them before they ripen. The heaviest pinenuts means lots of hungry bears. Withy all this rain we could see pinenuts being everywhere. Making bears spread out more. Last year one Mountain range had a major hatch and other ranges had very little.

Going to a youth shooting education day tomorrow and Sunday getting out lookin for critters and gonna exercise the pot lickers. Going to another are that NDOW seems to push every year but never does produce a lot of bears. Worth a look and it's cool country.

My favorite thread of the year.
keepitcold did you get a tag?

Jason do you run lion a lot too?
Once the bear seasons taken care of it's Lions and bobcats with the dogs. I get to hunt from August to about April-May each year with the hound hunting.

That's a lot of dog running. That's another thing I would like to try someday. I know a guy who went on one lion hunt with hounds and liked it so much he ended up getting a hound of his own. It looks pretty awesome. You might have to carry me after a while, though. That's some good excercise for yourself too it looks like.

Honestly, it's the hardest hunting I've ever done and I like to think ive seen some tough hunting. It's got the mental and a lot of physical plus your depending on dogs, dogs rather than just yourself or a buddy. I'm kinda one that really likes a challenge and hounds meets that beyond my expectations more often than not. My buddy has hunted with myself and other houndsmen for overb10 years and this year he is buying his first hounds. He's putting up big $$$$$ for finished dogs. I prefer raising pups up to see them become "hounds".
