I see, and agree. As much as we enjoy the badlands of SD and WY, I'm sure ND would be just as much fun.

Off to research tags......

That article was on my google feed the other morning.

My sentiments exactly. With all the bad news coming out of areas of other states regarding the fate of mule deer, it was something positive to read.

I don't know if its in the cards for me with finances and family obligations; but why not check it out? Hunt someplace new, see some new country? 😉

Regards,

Rcfireninja how'd the mulies fair this past winter in sd? Looking at doing a hunt in sd. I know some people down there that said they've been having a tough time with disease and a rough winter

From what I can find non-resident archery deer tag applications were due March 1.

This would be correct. Non residents cannot get OTC archery mule deer permits. I found this out 2 days after the deadline. As a resident I can get OTC tags but when I tried to plan a few days of hunting with my elk hunting buddy who lives in Minnesota the game and fish told me that he would of had to apply by 3-1.

Well, that plan will not work for this year. On the list for next year for sure.

This is our first year archery hunting. SD will keep us plenty busy will a few different tag opportunities.

I have no idea of west river herd health. We were in one small area of Meade county a few weeks ago, and saw some deer, but that doesn't really mean anything.

I've been seeing some groups out on the prairie while traveling . I'll know more in June when I start scouting. I don't think there was much die off this year.

Wonder if leftovers are a viable option?

Nope. Not for mule deer. Draw odds for the mule deer archery tag has been around 35% in the past few years. It's an awesome tag to have. Some damn big mule deer and tons of public land.

One percent of rifle tags go to non res. For rifle tags they use bonus points. Pretty tough draw odds with only one percent of the tags available. Archery there are not any points. Just random every year.

Deer quality is good if you are looking to hunt 150"-175" bucks. After that it gets a lot tougher. I've seen a lot of mature deer that just have bad genetics. The other reason I believe it's tough for bucks to get really big in ND is because of the 2 week gun season in the rut. With it being wide open country there isn't a lot of escapement.

Either a rifle tag or an archery tag is a good tag to have in ND.
